hi all, most virus scanners become bigger in my experience as they start to tackle more and more things such as spyware, trojans and worms as well as developing better scanning engines - norton is probably a bad example but take Kav and Mcafee,

For me, NOD is unusable with seti at home running at low prio in the background.

I mean, it makes apps and menus, and even task manager take MINUTES to come up on my 2.4gh p4 running at 2.7.

I don't know what it is, maybe there is some low prio thread, within NOD that is being starved, but it totally is unusable. Even with IMON disabled, and with the directory excluded from AMON's view...

KAV is not bothered at all.

Maybe there is a conflict between NOD32 and another application. My computer: Celeron 900Mhz, 128MB, Windows XP SP2.... There must be a conflict. You may concact ESET to help you with solving this problem.

I agree, definitely sounds like a conflict. The slowest for me is KAV, and that only pads on 1-3 seconds before anything executes. Now minutes on the other hand, should be by no means normal.

Yes, I contacted support repeatedly, over the last few weeks.

They suggested some experiments, which is how I know it is AMON that is the point of conflict, and not IMON. Further, I know that excluding the setiathome directory does NOT cure the problem.

Yes, obviously, there is a conflict with setiathome, I said that. But the conflict is only due to seti running 100% of cpu, at low priority. It does not conflict with any other program I have ever tried.

I sent a zip of my setiathome directory to them. We'll see if the try it.

Thank you for this information. Your earlier post did not give it. This is very close to the specs on my old Compaq except it is 256 ram, that I am considering it for and was wondering how it would do. If I could just get a good deal on it now. ;)

AntiVir's realtime scanner runs light. Only a couple of tasks running. Can't remember the exact amount of memory used, but it's not much.

Sorry for being a bit off topic but does authentium have incremental updates or is it the same as F-prot?

    Cheers

Compared to other AV's, it's not light in the number of running processes or the amount of memory it uses. BUT it is generally considered to be a "light" AV in the fact that it generally has little effect on system performance.

However, this may not be the case with your hardware/software combination.

Therefore, it is best to test it on your particular computer.

There's nothing lighter than not having to scan.
Wish BitDefender would try an implement some of these techniques.
