license renewal strategy

I need to renew my license for v2.7 in a couple of days. I'm trying to determine if I should renew it for 1 or for 2 years, the reason being is I'm wondering if I would lose any "license time" when the next major release occurs; ie, would I receive full benefit if I have to purchase version 3, for instance, if it is released before the 2 year renewal runs out or would version 3 be standalone and no time remaining would be applied? I'm just trying to (potentially) lose a minimum amout of money. ...kind of a convoluted question but I hope I was clear enough to get an answer.
