When I try to do a differential backup of a 270g backup with free space of 160g it shows a lack of space message. This is surely ridiculous after 3 days from original. Can anyone help?

The estimated space appears to be just the amount of used space + 8% for partition boot sector + overhead.

Just completed a full hard drive backup and immediately tried a Differential. The estimated size of differential was the same initial estimated for the full backup.

In order to get a valid estimate, the program would have to read all used sectors and compare them to the full backup archive. This would take considerable time.

Does the program allow you to override this message and attempt the backup; or does it just stop you from performing the backup?

I turned off auto defrag and performed just prior to full backup. If left on, this could cause large differential backup files.

If program stops you from attempting differential backup, a work-around would be backup all partitions separately. This would allow the estimated archives sizes to be smaller and free space larger.
