    hello,
i thought i would see if the problems with random crashing is hardware issue or a
    is windows.
so i booted from a kubuntu Linux live CD.
ok so i used the first choice load kubuntu
but the starting the linux kernal was slower than on my old p3 pc i thought this isn't right.
and the rest took ages to load as well.
but during this time the dvd drive seemed to keep turning on and off.
then when it gets going it makes that power up noise and then at the same time the light flashes on the dvd drive.
so it seems my dvd drive isnt very good for a start.
so i thought i will put it in the other drive but the other drive cant be in the boot order because it didnt boot from the cd if i put it in the other drive.
so could it be that the dvd drive isnt very good and turns on and off during it and thats why its slower than on my old pc loading kubuntu linux live cd?
    thanks in advance
    lodore

    Hello,

Change the boot order in BIOS.

Do not use bad hardware for any sort of software testing. It's really impossible to tell if you have hardware problem, hardware incompatibility, low specs, bad image, scratched CD, a thousand other reasons.

Before you test Kubuntu, make sure your hardware is OK. Eliminate problems one by one. Working with interactive problems is difficult. Find the Green Y and then identify the Red Xs.

it does seem that the cd drive is nearly dead already why cant they make them better its the second dvd drive since i got this pc two years ago.
i was trying out the linux livecd folowing reading a mag i got saying if you have a pc that crashes often try booting from a linux live cd and if you still get problems its a hardware issue and not windows.
    low specs no
    scratched cd maybe
    hardware problem cd drive yes
    hardware problem could be ram

Could be a bad cd. Have you booted off that disk before?

If all else fails just boot off a usb flash drive, its much faster.

i used the same disc on my old pc and it loaded alot faster
even the linux kernal loaded faster.
but the drive on that machine stayed on the whole time and didnt turn on and off like on my main pc.
how do i get a an image on the usb to make it bootable?
im getting a 2gb corsair usb pen soon so knowing how to would be nice

    yes i know:D
btw i done a check from the cd and it passed all the tests so the cd is not scratched or damaged.
so it might be the dvd drive in my main pc.
    why so craply made?
this is my second dvd drive in this pc.
as i said it makes the warm up noises for a while and the light flashes then it stops for a while why the light doesn't flash and doesn't make noise. the loading doesn't continue intill the drive makes noise and and light comes back on again
    stupid drives
the drive in my old pc is 6 years old and still works but im on the second dvd drive in this pc and this one seems to be on its way out as well.
sure says alot about the throw away culture these days.
