Re: Linux Live @ It's Best!

    Apropos above post re Archlive.iso:

Might not be 'fully grown' just yet:
-multiple problems with boot in VMWare: had to 'hwd -x' and redo xorg to get to a screen in the live CD
-when booted with GUI; network showed connected but FF no access ??
-multiple errors with HD installer "Larchin"

UInfortunately Ended as failure on many fronts :at least with me and VM :gack:

YMMV and this was a run in a VM

    Great concept, obviously close...
Great effort by godane but not prime time for lesser mortals cest moi.

( LOL: just looking for the cheater Arch install was me :) :) )

    Knoppix 6.0 Adriane - A genuine masterpiece

    Hi all,

I've rushed and tested Knoppix 6.0 Adriane.

    It's amazing!

As you may or may not know, Knoppix is a phenomenal Linux live CD, with unsurpassed hardware detection, low system requirements and excellent stability. The latest version brings out some new, unique features to the Linux world. Let me introduce you to Adriane, featuring screen reader enabled by default, Compiz enabled by default, codec support for MP3 and Windows video formats, Iceweasel browser with Noscript, Java, Synaptic, and many other goodies.

Simply marvelous. It's the first distro (that I know of) that is actually geared toward visually impaired people. Highly commendable.

    Comments and suggestions are welcome.

    Regards,
    Mrk

    Very nice test, Mrk. :thumb:

Wish I could install to HDD like with Ubuntu etc. .. but it is strongly
advised not to attempt this in the wiki.

I wish you wouldn't do this Mrk. I had just settled down again to doing 'ordinary' things like baking cakes when I read your thread title.

I had to have a look at it. :)

I couldn't believe how quick it loaded. Everything worked straight away, probably the best one I've tried (as a newbie of course) Really liked it.

I have three things to mention. One was in Iceweazle some of the words were in German when I pressed file, history etc. Two, was it wouldn't let me post on a forum after I put in my password, I could read posts etc, but when I tried to post HE told me I couldn't do it.

How do you turn the voice off? I chose option 10 at boot, then LXDE, but he just kept talking. In the end I had to take out the disc as he would not stop :D

I found it Steve (with your help)

All I had to do was type Knoppix when the livecd started to boot, and no more voice.

Thanks for your help, cannot give you a smilie as I dont seem to be able to use them in this live cd.

    Liking Knoppix.

I tried this on my laptop and it bombs when I try full graphics. What cheatcodes do you use at boot for Vesa?

Tried it also in Vbox and the default screen resolution doesn't work. Can't find where to change it. Also there is an "echo" in the audio.

Your guess is as good as mine. Adrian spared my laptops shoddy 845g chipset requiring no more than "knoppix" @ the prompt. According to his release notes they're still in the process of implementing the 5.x cheat-codes and suspect any lingering issues will be addressed in an upcoming release.

I don't know too much about knoppix but I can say LXDE is ace. It's basically openbox with wings. It really is quick, light and quite configurable. I tried it some months ago and it was buggy and a bit sparse in features but now it really is becoming quite polished. With a little effort you can also beautify it as much as any other DE. I'm running it on my Arch partition and I love it. It will probably replace XFCE on my Arch I reckon.
Knoppix has a great rep, so along with LXDE I would imagine it's a very polished livecd.
