Hello, now that my children are approaching their teenage years they are obviously wanting to start using chat programs, I have pidgin installed and after a lot of searching i have been unable to find a set of rules to cover the program. The rules would need to cover Googletalk, MSN and AIM. KIS seems to have box after box pop up with different ports wanting to connect and i would like to be in control with no rules for the children to allow before they use the program. The only way i can seem to stop the pop ups is to allow all activity which i dont think would be wise to leave it that way. Can anyone offer any advice to help me with setting KIS and Pidgin. Thanks for any suggestions.
Thank you for taking the time to reply Sjoeii. Just one more question before i go ahead. Would this not compromise security though if i were to do this, and which boxes need to be ticked on the attachment? i would guess "Do not scan network traffic" DefenseWall does have Pidgin added to it untrusted list so i guess i would have some form of extra protection. Thank you once again
I think putting the application in the trusted zone very seriously compromises security for that app. Its a flaw in KIS.
At the Outpost forums, nippauls posted that he recommends teh following rules for any IM: TCP Outbound Allow UDP Allow Reason being that it can be hard to create a good ruleset that isnt too restrictive. So just allow all for pidgin (not trusted zone) and youll be fine.
Thank you for the replies Zombini and WSFuser. Rules applied and Pidgin taken out of the trusted zone
