After loading a test copy of the beta I can truly say the GUI is unlike any other I have used. It still needs obvious work as it is a first beta but I could end up liking it.

    Hello,

Here is a review by languy99 for those who want to have a look at the new GUI.

No need to discuss the review, take it with a pinch of salt.

This looks great! I wish more antivirus vendors would catch on to this light, gentle, and organized look.

    Re: KIS 2012 - Screenshots

    Main new features/improvements:

    • The work of "cloud" technologies (Kaspersky Security Network) is reflected in the main window of the product, which increases their visibility and understandability
    • Added reputation check of suspicious files in KSN without the need to execute them (right-click option)
    • Information about patterns of behavior triggered by software are now collected for analysis and reputation assessing in KSN (PBS)
    • Added an intelligent system to download updates; now updates are downloaded only for the active components of the product, and computer resources during the upgrade are optimized so as not to interfere with the performance of other programs
    • Anti-spam module is now integrated with the "cloud" backend and as a consequence of that, will no longer require training ("Good/bad mail" samples)
    • Vastly improved technology for detecting rootkits' actions aimed at intercepting the boot process on the computer in order to conceal its presence
    • Substantially changed the main interface product: Now, in the main window you can see all the necessary information, more comfortable viewing of Kaspersky Lab news, with added support for touch screens, as well as a Task manager for product tasks and an improved desktop gadget
    • Improved protection against unknown threats by monitoring the activity of programs
    • Redesigned phishing protection: in addition to checking of web resources against an offline database of phishing links, a request is sent to the cloud database, and in the absence of information from both sources a heuristic analysis is performed. In general, checking for phishing links is realized when viewing a site in your browser, in communication through IM clients and email correspondence
    • Significantly improved scanning of links: when determining the severity of links, information from databases located on Kaspersky Lab servers (in the so-called "cloud") are used in addition to information from a database of malicious and phishing URLs. Also, you can now specify which category of undesirable websites to block (such as "pornography", "cruelty and violence", etc.)
    • Significantly improved product performance and reduced its impact on the system and other programs.

(taken from Russian section, pardon the inaccurate translation)

Amongst the improvements, I've also noticed that HIPS is no longer vulnerable to some tdl3/4 variants (added monitoring of print spooler driver managing) and on top of that System watcher got an upgrade as well and now it provides (amongst other things) protection against tdl3/4 without user intervention. (at least with the 10 samples I tried, although it still needs work) In addition, ChangeDrvPath is no longer an issue as well (via a set of actions that are now monitored by HIPS) .
The UI is done in this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qt_(framework) if anyone's interested.

The list of changes is great...hope 2012 is light on resources coz thats the main drawback kaspersky is facing right now

What about mem/cpu usage? Is this beta heavier than kis 2011 cf2 or not?

The problem I have with KIS2011 apart from the interface is that it eats up too much CPU even when it's 'idle'. Is this still the case?

It's too early to say anything about performance. There's most likely a lot of debug features enabled (and performance improvements disabled) slowing things down.

In the 2011 version the idle time scanner may have been running. I found that disabling it stopped that.

And shouting (caps) will fix that  ?
    Anyway,
-every PC is different, it may be fast on my machine but not on yours
-it's a beta (and a first beta build at that), there's plenty of things which aren't working including, but not limited to, performance degradations
tl;dr- try it for yourself if you're interested. :)

    New build:
    Correctly translated changelog for v2012
-KSN (Kaspersky Security Network) operations are now displayed in the main window of the product, which makes it more transperant for the end users
-Added reputation checks for suspicious executable files via KSN
-Templates gathering for the particular program type behaviors, in order to evaluate/calculate KSN reputation values (PBS)
-Updated intelligent Updater Module, now only active components are updated and resources optimized not to interfear with foreground programs
-AntiSpam module will no longer require training, KSN will supply the needed information as needed
-Improved technologies for detecting unknown rootkits, which target themselves to interrupt OS normal boot cycles in order to conceal detection
-Significant changes to main GUI which now conviniently displays product status: improved KL News Viewer, touch screen support, intrenal task manager, updated gadget design and usability improvements
-Improved protection from unknown threats via ActiveProcess monitoring subsystem
-Refactored protection from phishing (Local checks + KSN request, Heuristics scan if URL missing from both) and applicable to web surfing, IM conversations and email
-Improved URL checking module (Local checks + KSN request), now categories of websites can be restricted based on content
-Improved product compatibility with other programs and reduced overall system footprint

New KSN will not be operational untill the end of March.

I would rather keep silent than to say almost nothing. Sorry mate, but your writings are like politician's - about everything, but in essence - nothing. Sure different machines, different people, different countries, different ...etc. But you always can say : for me it's better or for me it's so so, but not to use equilibristics of words. Thank you.

It tells everything that can be said about performance at the moment. It's the first beta build with a lot of debug and unfinished code and any performance results told at this stage will likely be a lot different with the release version (so they're pretty much useless).
