KDE 4.2 update released

4.3 Final in Debian is going to be the nuts i'm sure. KDE is just getting better and better. There's still a long way to go but already it's better than 3.5.

Hey Pedro, i'm back with Squeeze and KDE 4.2.2 after a month long affair with Fedora, and it's like a breath of fresh air. Speed and stabilty, apt, a mass of software - love it. How could I ever of left!

 

It's stable for the most part, since it never crashed on me, but sometimes there are issues with a program or another. It's testing after all.

I have a question i hope some of you guys can answer. How can i scroll 2 documents (split horizontally) in Kate at the same time? It's about the only thing that is bugging me in Kate.

Yes, I installed it yesterday on Kubuntu via the ppa. No problems - KDE is really getting better and better

 

The first link does not seem to work for me.

A question for those who like KDE 4.x, why do you think it is better than 3.x and what specific features you find to be of use/good looks/etc? I'm curious, that's all. Taste is ever-evolving, hey, I'm my own witness, but still ...

Somehow the second link got screwed with an extra http. There it highlights the major differences -"Highlights of KDE 4 include..."
I can't say much about 3.5 because i never used it much. But version 4 is tha bomb for me.

Take Dolphin as an example. It's simplicity while not lacking anything major. And those small details, like the address bar. Nautilus turns to crap next to it, that's just the way it is
Did i mention the sidebar is now useful and not annoying?

Plasma is a big deal. Things look well designed, integrated and fluid, not hacked together, which sometimes GNOME feels like.

 

Oh yes, i forgot. In Dolphin try Columns view mode (my new default), and Split of course.
In the sidebar, with the 'Folders' Panel (F7), expand a few directories with some depth. Now scroll up and down.
See what i mean?

 

And the application launcher.. At first, i didn't like it, but now i can't think of anything else to use. I can pop it and my favorites are right there, or start typing the name of the app i want. It's not all roses, but i like it alot.

 

Interesting ... I guess it comes to acquired taste and habit, after all.
It's amazing how we do some things extremely fast and efficiently and yet do some others in old, archaic ways, only because we did it once that way.

KDE 4.3 is excellent. But I still had the problem with Digikam mentioned above. See also https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/digikam/+bug/377560 . After adding the https://launchpad.net/~kubuntu-ppa/+archive/experimental ppa to my repos it finally works

I made the switch completely from gnome to KDE with the 4.2 release and haven't looked back since.

Wow, it looks awesome. It seems Linux purists are lamenting, but how does one expect the typical Windows user to embrace Linux without the razzle dazzle? I think this is great foresight by the KDE team, and as long as the features can be disabled and they cause no stability issues when enabled, then there should be no problems. IMO this is a positive initiative on Linux' part. They'll need to improve in other areas such as game and mainstream application support to attract a larger Windows user base, and that could probably happen with careful planning and the right approach, even though it looks not to be any time soon.

 

Even though i don't think KDE per se can do that much about adoption, i do believe KDE + QT can do alot to attract ISV's, which is the main front on the software part.
Then there's the hardware part..

BTW, KDE can be installed on Windows too, even if i don't like that particular bit. I want it all for me
