Good stuff. Glad to hear KAV is listening to its customers.

Now we need to get FF to throw his "library" at it.

Avast doesn't scan, but makes a database regarding your system to be helpfull when infected when you run the screensaver :)

I found that KAV5 also has this feature. It's "hidden" under:
    Settings tab\User's tasks

"Automatic scan on application startup" thingie is the one you're looking for.

I have scanned all my nasties with KAV 6 already. Unfortunately the logfile I got was a terrible mess, too many detections on the same row, almost impossible to count detected samples manually, just opposite that eScan 5.1.1 Free has in their logfile. Sorry.

Btw, as my sample collection is based on open web sources, too many samples were verified by Kaspersky as infected in the web, at least 90 % or so, after all this, the final result will always be a bit skewed to KAV. It's called the "Tauscan" syndrome, Tauscan detected 99.999 % of trojan samples when KAV only 96 % or something like that. Can you guess from which database these samples were?

    Best regards,
    Firefighter!

    Firefighter,

Is it eScan 7.2 Free? Or is that BitDefender 7.2 Free?

    Regards,
    Firecat

Yes, it is (avast can run an antivirus screensaver on top of your existing screensaver - all you have to do is select it in the system screensaver preferences window).

    But it's not patented. :)

Thanks, you ask difficult questions, Firefighter! ;-) But I understand what you are saying. Did you have the feeling that KAV6 detection is close/same/better then KAV5? I understand that it would be a "non-scientific" argument!

Because of same signatures, the detection rate of different KAV versions doesn't have so big importance. All over 99 % or so scorings in those INDEPENDENT official tester sites with KAV, the rest doesn't make any sense more.

The biggest add value in KAV version comparings relies on usability, factors that can make these programs robust and install & forget systems, here the newest versions have their chance.

    Best regards,
    Firefighter!

Has KAV's heuristics engine improved with version 6?

I like the idea of a protective suite with all components working well together seamless. It's an impressive feature list. My only concern is towards corrupt databases for instance, like i allready experienced 3 times with KAV5 personal. Is a corrupt database (as an example) with the KAV6-suite not leaving your system with it's pants completely down in one blow? With the antivirusprogram itself it was only the antivirus that was affected, but now with the suite...? It's a horrifying thaught.
Please explain if my perception is totally wrong. At least, i hope it is!

    Hi Firefighter,

I was wondering about the detection because signatures are only usefull when the engine does its job, right?

By the way, I'm intrigued about what you have written in your sig... Could you explain?

No :D , I meant what does this mean:

Some savolax answer to the southern man:
    Q. No onko viiruksia näkynyt?
    A. No voe tokkiisa. Just äskönnii oes männynnä yks vuan en ehtinnä nähä. Tuolta saanan takkoo se männä jölököttel suorraah järvvee letit hulumuteh!

It's an inside story. Unfortunately, Savolax, or shall we say Savonian language, has not even translated to Finnish yet, so, after that we have to wait some more 300 years when there will be a new "Bill Gates" to solve that problem! :D

    Best regards,
    Firefighter

About Savonian language. It's not a matter of words, more likely, it's a matter of human mind and a way to spend your time ever and ever.

    Best regards,
    Firefighter!

There are two just the opposite tribes in Finland, "Pohojalaaset" (the Ostrobothnians, living in the upper Western Finland) and "Savolaiset" (the Savonians, living anywhere else in Finland but not in the Åland Islands = between Sweden and Finland).

When two men committed a suicide by hanging themselves (the most popular national "sport" in Finland), one of each of those tribes, they left a letter behind to their relatives.

The Ostrobothnian wrote: "Paree näin!" (Better like this!)

The Savonian wrote: "Oun kuullunna, et aenoasttaa kaks alakavvaa tunttii köyven piässä oes kaeikkein pahinta, vuan se jäläkkee einnii haelee!"
    Something like that;
(I've heard, that only those first two hours on the end of that rope are the worst, after that, who cares!)

Maybe this will tell the character feature of Savonians to you. ;)

    Best regards,
    Firefighter!
