    for me it's important to know i can trust what i install on my machine if someone has a serious problem for whatever reason that merits attention. i do not expect a trusted application to do enough damage to warrant full scale recovery.

    having said that i realise this is not utopia and that there is no such thing as a 100% reliable product - but i do expect a lot from a product i pay for.

    considering the amount of security software that is now run on a machine i guess overall the products are fairly reliable.

    it's always a toss up deciding how many layers of protection and therefore how many products to install. the more processes running the more chance of something triggering Murphy's Law.
