I've just visited KAV's viruswatch again and I've noticed the following: see the attachement. (red circled number). Does this mean they're removing viruses from their defs or what ?

yep, it looks like they have removed some... probably damaged or mistake signatures.

i have seen minus on dr.webs live status too, and the signature count went down at this point, they are definatly removals, probably wrongly added signatures.

Those are not "wrongly added signatures", there are only two explanations:

    1. Generic signatures added and those it covers are removed.

    2. Viruswatch hickup, as Platextract says..............that has happened.

I think there might be a problem with the viruswatch site updating as well; the past couple of days they've been showing the "detection time", but the "update released" is left blank until hours later - there's some on there still showing as no update released even though they were discovered last night, one of them I submitted and detection was released a couple of hours later but according to the site an update hasn't been released yet, so I guess something may be wrong with viruswatchlite.

I think it's more likely a tidyup especially considering generic signatures can be added.
