I downloaded the latest java runtime in order to run Asureus, however I have uninstalled that. Do I need to uninstall the java runtime as well?

Yes, you can uninstall it, if you do not need JRE eg. to run java applets in browser.

Usually java applets are little things embedded into a webpage. Like if you play Yahoo! Pool, you would see a little coffee cup before loading up the pool game. That would be one example of a Java applet. Java is usually not needed, but it does provide a little extra functionality.

So long as you don't need any Java, you can uninstall it safely. Usually if you do, the program will tell you that you need the JRE enviroment.
