Issues Cloning Compaq 6510b (SATA – USB SATA)

    Equipment:

    Windows XP SP2
    True Image 10 (build 4,942)
Compaq 6510b (Seagate Momentus SATA HDD)
ICY Box USB Caddy (Seagate Momentus SATA HDD)

    Scenario:

Running ATI from XP cloning the Laptop HDD to the larger Caddy HDD, clones fine and the two drives appear to be identical.

Replace the Laptop HDD with the Caddy HDD, when trying to boot the laptop gets past POST then hangs on black screen with flashing cursor, doesn’t get to boot menu (for XP or Recovery Console)

Swap the HDD’s back then try and boot the Caddy HDD from the USB Caddy gets past POST, past boot menu to XP splash screen then Blue Screen of Death.

    Any Ideas??

    langgav,

There could be a CHS geometry issue with Compaq laptops and a USB HD may not have the same geometry as the internal HD.

    Could you download ptedit32 from..

    ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/tools/pq/utilities/PTEDIT32.zip

Unzip the file and double click ptedit32.exe. At the top of the window, on the Hard Disk (Drive 1) line, how many cyl, heads, sectors per track are showing?

Now change the drop down choice to Drive 2. How many cyl, heads, sectors per track are showing?

    Hello langgav,

Thank you for choosing Acronis Disk Backup Software.

    Hey langgav,

Where are you? It's an interesting problem but with a solution.
