I read elsewhere (can't remember where) that mentioned the availabilty of a reduced functionality free LNS firewall.

Is this true? If so, where can I get it from?

I believe that after the 30 days you loose outgoing protection, so just keep it for the trial time and it will revert to the "free" version.

Some years ago, there was a free lite 1.0x version of Look 'n' Stop containing only a basic Internet Filtering (=packet filter). This version is no longer supported.
The 2.0x version will go in that mode after the 30 days trial period (Application Filtering and Advanced Options become disabled, and only the basic packet filter is working).
