i need an AV that has a system scan and that can scan an indiviual file by right clicking...nothing more. i don't want it to run in the background, i've tried norton and panda, but i can't get either to stop running in the background (especially norton) i can't just use the disk because it won't have the updates...

is this just wishful thinking or is there answer out there?

I have Panda Platinum on my system with everything disabled.
Use it for scanning via right clicking.

    Hello mickhayafe,

I am moving your thread to the other anti-virus software forum where it will get the proper attention.

    Personal taste.
I update just before I make a scan.

I only know one that only scans on-demand: BitDefender Free ;) Good for a backup AV, but use some resources...

    [EDIT] I forgot the Clamwin...

I use Kaspersky 4.5 as 'On Demand Scanner'. I gave up on their Resident Monitor.

KAV is the only AV that maxs out my CPU and Case fans during on demand scan. Definitely a big CPU eater... ;)

Along with kaspersky 4.5, I believe (not positive) that you can also NOT install the resident portion of the AV's with the following programs. DrWeb and F-prot. Both offer choices of "typical" and "custom" installs.

Agree, I use it as my 'walk the dog' scanner. I shut down all other software and come back an hour later. So I like Kaspersky 4.5 alot as my On Demand Scanner. ;)

There are several competent antivirus programs that can be set to scan *on-demand* only. These include but are not necessarily limited to DrWeb & AntiVir-PE.

To render DrWeb as *on-demand* only, right-click the SpiderGuard in your system tray, click "Settings," then uncheck the block "Load at Startup" then reboot. Poof! DrWeb is now on-demand only.

As for AntiVir-PE, simply leave the "Guard" block unchecked when you install it. If it's already installed, load the main GUI, click "Options" > click "Miscellaneous." On the resultant menu, uncheck "Load the Guard at system start" and then put a check in the block "Exit AntiVir if system was booted via the shell extension."

    DrWeb costs $29 at...

    AntiVir-PE is free at...
