I have no experience with lavabit, but I would highly recommend riseup.net mail. Its free, encrypted, and anonymous. It's also recommended by the developers of Tor.

I use my Mac mail iCloud email synchronized with my iPhone with no problems but then I don't share any sensitive data.I could not say how secure lavabit is.

IMO, I don't care what the privacy statement says. Unless encrypted all the way from the sender's computer to the recipient's computer, no email is private.

I use and advocate Gmail because it offers so many ways to deal with one's digital life. But I don't place ANY financial or highly personal data in email period, Gmail or otherwise...

Cloud services by their very nature are unsecure.

Well then you basically have to include Outlook/Hotmail, Gmail etc...as unsecure, since they are also a type of Cloud service.

iCloud is as secure as any other service of this type IMO.

If privacy is your concern I don't believe you will find anything better than Riseup mail. Anonymity, and strong 256 bit AES encryption. I've searched, and searched. I haven't found anything else this good that is free.

  10. Riseup is not for everybody. It's for political dissidents, not for signing up for angry birds  .
