Is Java sun microsystems safe?

    Hi All

    sorry for n00b question, but I was thinking of trying out a chat facility (on misticriver), and it requires the java sun microsystems plug-in for my firefox browser.

    Are there any risks involved in using java for this purpose? And what precautions should I take, if any
