Hello, I decided not to renew my Panda Antivirus and installed the 30 day trial. I updated fine but when I tried to do the initial scan it says my files are locked "file cannot be opened may be in use by another application or operating system" in blue. Are my security settings to blame. I scanned fine with Panda so I do not know why I am unable to do a scan now.

I would be very grateful for any advice, I am a complete novice with computers but decided to ditch Panda and wanted to try NOD32 after hearing good reports. I also installed the Kerio firewall but if I turn this off I still cannot scan.

Thank you in advance, Mandy o_O

Hello . Welcome to Wilders !

First congratulations you didn't renew Panda AV , I am sure you'll be please and much happier with NOD32 .

In every computer there are locked files and you should not care about them because it is normal . Some files such as pagefile.sys or ntuser.dat are in use by the operating system (Windows) and Windows protects them . The same applies, for example , for System Restore which Windows protects so nothing touches inside ; pagefil.sys is important file and imagine what would happen if everybody could "touch" it .

Another example is files locked by an application . Antivirus software also cannot scan password-protected archives because they cannot be accessed and the AV doesn't know the password . The fact that NOD32 reports that but Panda doesn't , doesn't mean that Panda or every other can scan them but NOD32 can't . It is normal https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?p=833165#post833165

Since you are new NOD32 user , I recommend you read these

A Big Thank You Hitech Boy for your reassurance, I now realise there isn't much to worry about having looked through the threads you suggested.

Being a complete novice it was a big step to rid myself of Panda and download separate antivirus and firewall but after reading such negative comments on Panda I decided to change. I shall peruse this forum with interest now. :)
