I'd like to mention two HIR restores I did today.

Dell Optiplex (5 years old) to Gateway computer (8 years old). Both IDE.

Gateway IDE computer (8 years old) to Dell 9150 SATA computer (2 years old).

Special imaging software wasn't needed. I could have used any of the standard programs. The hard work was done by TBOSDT. It costs $15 and only needs to be bought if you want to do a HIR. You don't need to have it prior to creating the image. Only for the restore.

Care to make a how to or is there one in the kb. ??

    lol
I already know the Terabyte tools will do the job..:)
But if endusers find BING or IFW/IFD 'unfriendly' then this will surely drive them to SP
    :ouch:
I've worked my way through BING and IFD/IFW..
As usual the TB softs provide endless deep granular functionality but this is a leetle confronting for pondscum cest moi.
    Regards

PS you mention cost but the site suggests free to home users or have I missed something.?

    Longboard,

Yes, it is ambiguous. Free does sound better.

I thought it was difficult when I first started to read the PDF but it's not so hard after all. The last few pages in the PDF explain what to do for HIR and it's then a matter of removing a few ";"

If you can restore an image, you can learn how to do a TBOSDT HIR.

I was intrigued by the restore of an IDE image to a SATA computer. TBOSDT copies the SATA drivers (which you must provide) to the new, non-booting OS, installs the drivers and then creates registry keys and values. I was stunned to see WinXP boot after TBOSDT had done its job. And TBOSDT only took a minute to work its magic.

PS.... You are correct. "Free for Personal Use"

Hi, interesting question would be : can it restore any image created by any imaging software,or only restricted to native terabyte format ??

    Huupi,

TBOSDT doesn't care which software was used to image and restore. It's used after you restore your image to different hardware and find that the OS doesn't boot. TBOSDT will enable the OS to boot by installing new IDE Controller drivers or Mass storage drivers. That is its function. To boot the OS. Once the OS has booted and finds new hardware you need to install drivers for your new chipset, video card, sound card, modem etc. I think this is standard practice for HIR software.

    Brian-not so with ShadowProtect.

Usually ALL that may or may not need reinstalling, are some Windows ones to do with IDE,from memory, maybe a few more.

Theoretically even this shouldnt be necessary.

All that needs to be done is to let Windows automatically find them-the whole job takes minutes.

No need even to install off the OS CD

Once I had to reinstall the nVidia Graphics driver.

Nothing else-definitely doesnt require a general reinstall of all drivers, which can be a major, tricky or impossible job.

One of the features of SP HIR is that all drivers should be reinstalled by SP itself.

    Hairy Coo,

Thanks. I was just guessing on the basis of reading posts. No personal experience.

Still, if you are restoring an image to a different computer with a different video card, sound card, wireless network card, chipset, modem, eSATA card, printer, scanner, etc, from the original computer, where do the new drivers come from?

This is the bit I don't get. I have a system with a matrox graphics card. I move to a new system with nVidia. where do the HIR programs get the new drivers from ? not from the old system . so do these programs store all drivers for all possible hardwares or do they just approximate ?

I see your point -quite right-of course in that case MAY be necessary if the hardware is completely dissimilar and is incompatible with the existing drivers, for example modems

Its not necessary if the hardware uses same drivers which is quite often.

    Long View,

I can answer for TBOSDT. The IDE disc has no drivers. It extracts drivers from C:\windows\driver cache\i386\driver.cab. The SATA disc has SATA drivers and no others.

What may be happening in that case is that the same nVidia drivers apply to a large range of models, which is the case with my card

HIR of course will only carry over the drivers from your existing system,so if the hardware is completely different, like a new printer or soundcard, you will need to install these different drivers.

When we designed HIR, our primary objective was to ensure that the operating system volume would successfully boot and that the user could login (ie the mouse and keyboard work). Therefore, HIR does all of the work necessary to ensure that the storage and human-input-device configurations are correct for the current hardware. After booting, it's up to the user to install drivers for non-boot-critical devices (such as for network, audio, video, etc), but in practice, most of the drivers for these devices are already on your system and so they are installed shortly after you login.

grnxnm - I can see the benefit of HIR in an emergency situation, where speed is of the essence. I'm curious though as to whether using HIP is as good as a clean install - assuming time is not relevant. Assume 2 users set up a clean system on machine 1. Then one uses HIP to a different machine and the other does a clean install. will there be any practical differences in the final results ?

    Just carried out an HIR-

If you can imagine a driver backup app, which scans your current system for all drivers ,HIR is similar to that-it scans the current hardware/system for drivers and then installs/restores them together with the choosen image to the new hardware/system.

In my case ,as I had installed a different make of motherboard, with different controllers, some old drivers were different to the ones required for the new mobo,so obviously some new drivers needed reinstalling.

If the new hardware has the same specs basically as the old-a minimal amount of new drivers are usually required-for example when installing a new HDD.

Otherwise if the new hardware is completely different, some new drivers are required, all depends on the circumstances as regards how many.

There are may variables in my experience.

    Hairy Coo,

Your HIR is what I'd imagine most people would be doing in practice. My HIRs were just tests and I wouldn't expect anyone to restore like this in real life. Still, it's nice to know that it can be done with completely different computers, not just with a different motherboard.

when prices of Samsung Solid state drives fall a bit I intend to add a SSD drive as C: and use my old C: drive for data. without HIR I would simply re-install everything to the new SSD. with HIR I can see that I could make the change more quickly but would the new C: via HIR be just as good as a complete re-install ?

Are there specific types of hardware that trigger Windows needing to be reactivated? (mobo only?)

Does SP HIR have any particular functionality if/when a reactivation is required?

    Long View,

I doubt HIR is needed for this procedure. You should get away with a normal restore to the new HD as SSD drivers could be installed before you create an image of the old HD. Again, I'm guessing. HIR is only needed when you are restoring an image and the motherboard is different. I can't speak for ShadowProtect but TBOSDT HIR only changes motherboard drivers.
