This posting builds upon Bubba's [highlight] FAQ: Screen Shots and Image Posting[/highlight] posting. It is assumed that the viewer has read and practiced the concepts that Bubba has illustrated. The Wilders [highlight]Test forum[/highlight] exists for such practice.

After capture, the saved image can be edited and enhanced (before posting) using a Microsoft or 3rd party image editor--such as those included with digital cameras or available free such as PhotoFiltre or Picasa2.

Posting an image attachment can really help others see the same thing you see. Avoid using 3rd party websites for storage of screenshots being linked to illustrate your forum posting. It is best to upload attachments direct to this website (Wilders) for properly security and accessibility plus it is very easy to accomplish.

    Re: Attachment modification & enhancement.

A single posting can include an uploading of up to five attachments. These will be displayed within the original posting where the uploading occurred using the ATTACH tags.

The poster can control placement of attachments & comments which appear within the posting. In advanced edit mode, user can modify text comments and add/remove attachments. Each attachment uploaded is assigned a unique attachment ID. This ID is placed inside an "attach" uBCode syntax as illustrated in the attachments below.

    ---------------------------------------------
    a2-attach.jpg
    ---------------------------------------------
In advanced edit mode under the Manage attachments feature, subsequent attachments can be added (5 total); or existing attachments can be removed from the posting. An attachment image can be removed, re-edited and re-uploaded again. The file name can remain the same but a new attachment ID will be assigned. The text will need to be edited to update the ID and change placement--if necessary. I believe(?) postings can be edited only within 5 days of original posting date.

To display the same attachment in other posts, right-click the original attachment, click properties, and copy the URL from the properties. Either post the URL as a link in other postings; or use the URL inside IMG tags to display a duplicate image--in another posting. Examples below using the first image attachment (194643) above :
(Thanks to LowWaterMark for my corrected info regarding viewing in another posting.)

While MS Windows provides rudimentary PrintScreen key functions, more versatility is possible using a dedicated Screen Capture program. The [highlight] Faststone Capture Home[/highlight] is excellent and includes a [highlight]Tutorial [/highlight]. Another very user friendly capture program is Gadwin PrintScreen. Numerous other programs are available. Here is a forum thread suggesting [highlight] other screen capture [/highlight] utilities.

The forum user help section provides many examples of how to use [highlight] Wilders Security Forums vB Code list[/highlight] to format/alter the appearance of your input. Any time spent there can be very helpful.

IMHO, many attachments are too large and non-relative content should be removed before screen capture or by editing prior to uploading. Some modifications such as window sizing and column width adjustment can best be made prior to screen capture.

A smaller file size is visually neater and will be quicker loading. Viewers using 56K dialup internet access really appreciate the attachment being no larger than necessary. Likewise, file size (bytes) vary greatly when gif, jpg & png file types are compared. Test save the images in each file type and select the smallest file size before uploading as an attachment.

    Examples of printscreen capture modification.
Suggested alternatives possible via adjustments before capture & after editing using an image editing program.

An extract from a previous posting about Image Attachment Arrangement.
Atttachment ID's can be centered using the [ center ] tag.

Availability of Faststone Capture v5.3 free version:
This free version has been removed from their main website but available elsewhere. Do a google search for FSCaptureSetup53.exe or FSCaptureSetup53.zip Check any download for viruses before use since download will not be coming direct from the vendor.

I suggest you make a couple of changes within the Faststone Capture default settings.
    a. Create a new folder to hold your captures. Then, within the autosave settings modifications, point to that folder for your saves. During first actual save, you will need to point to that folder during the first capture/save operation.

    b. Also suggest your edit & reverse the hotkey settings on the "Capture Full Screen" and "Capture Rectangle Region". This will enable the "draw a rectangle around intended capture" to be used every time you press the PrintScreen key. I cannot think of any time you would need to Capture a Full Screen. An attachment which occupies a full screen is usually not readable and a waste of time.
