    Wis. Governor Rejects Cat-Hunting Idea

    Apr 13, 5:49 PM (ET)

    BY RYAN J. FOLEY

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - A proposal to legalize the killing of feral cats is not going to succeed, Gov. Jim Doyle said Wednesday.

"I don't think Wisconsin should become known as a state where we shoot cats," said Doyle, a Democrat who neither hunts nor owns a cat. "What it does is sort of hold us up as a state that everybody is kind of laughing at right now."

He told reporters his office had received calls from around the country denouncing a proposal adopted Monday at meetings of the Wisconsin Conservation Congress, a public advisory group, that would classify wild, free-roaming cats as an unprotected species that kills song birds and other wildlife.

Outdoor enthusiasts approved the proposal 6,830 to 5,201 at Monday's spring hearings of the group.

The results get forwarded to the state Natural Resources Board for consideration, but any official action would have to be passed by the Legislature and signed by the governor.

Animal rights groups belittled the idea as inhumane and dangerous.

Doyle said he respects the Conservation Congress but "on this one I think everybody recognizes it's not going anywhere."

Some experts estimate that 2 million wild cats roam Wisconsin, and the state says studies show feral cats kill 47 million to 139 million songbirds a year.

South Dakota and Minnesota both allow wild cats to be shot.

Two state senators - Scott Fitzgerald and Neil Kedzie - had promised to do everything they can to keep the plan from becoming law.

Kedzie, who chairs the Natural Resources and Transportation Committee, called the issue "a distraction from the main tasks we have at hand."

    :)

What a crock! That senator is right, it's a smoke screen for something else they are trying to pass, better look harder at the bill!

What is with this shooting every blessed thing that moves these days?? It's probably little Cochise's and Detox's with sling shots and rocks anyway! (LOL!)

Remember if you shoot a cat, the cat owner should be able to shoot you! You are damaging his property, I would go out there and say I owned alll those cats, bill me for the spay/neuter job! LOL! Maybe I should!Hmmmmm.......

139 million birds! Are they sure, because I counted 118.325 million!

Dagalog, what a beautiful cat!! Love his coloring, may I borrow him for my cat collection and the PSP thread , we are decoratin with cats this week!! He is a very handsome guy! There are some ladies around here that would follow him anywhere! :)

I followed something else, Buck seems to have a newpaper he didn't tell us about or a relative doing so! www.smirkingchimp.com at the bottom of the page, seems to have alot of lively conversation!

THANKS, CLAIRE!! Looks like enough information to keep me reading for quite a looong time! :D

    YEA FOR NAT!!!!

    Marja - until further notice

Though we shall also not forget, that our BELOVED cats help
with the population of rats and mice !

The Unfortunate thing is: Too many strays that suffer. :'(

The thing to do: spay & neuter your pets !!! Plain and simple !

Right! It is better for the animals health, they live about 5 years longer, dog and cats!

Cats can populate a place faster than.....really really fast! :D

A cat having a litter of 6 about 4 times a year (min.) their kittens can do the same at about 9 months, you do the math, it is a humoungus problem.

HEY! There are an awful lot of people destroying things too??

So, what's the logical politician's conclusion going to be about that?? MUAHAHAHAHA!

    GUESS! :ninja:

Hi Rita!! He is a beauty, isn't he!! I really like his coloring!

He looks like a kitten still, and a tortoise? Is that right, Dag??

(My sister trained her cat to use the toilet, it is very strange to go to a restroom and have a BIG cat give you a look like, NOSY, AREN"T YOU?? Geez, never thought I would be embarassed by an animal, with four feet, anyway! :) Why she didnt' teach him to flush I wil never understand, it should be easy, put a cat toy on the handle! LOL!)

Anyway, I am going to go see where you sign something that says "NO WAY, JUST SPAY!"

That is one of the many ridiculous things - (govs) do with their time, huh?

And then they do profile on serial killers that say they love hurting animals, what are we teaching our kids?? Pray tell??
