This preview has gained about 20 points in Acid3, going from 60's to 80's. It also gained about 1000 points on PeaceKeeper, but still has a lot of room to improve on both tests.

It is true they still have to catch some in the javascript test (a pure theoretical test, in the real world it doesn't say that much. The javascript test is extremely intensive and assumes that javascript is the only languague used: a difference of 50 millisecons in this test will be impossible to notice. That is where there is a chance for IE, focusing on other things attributing to the feel of speed: startup time, os integration, improved webslices or something) and in acid3 when you compare them to opera and webkit (in lesser extent to firefox). But you can see they are really improving and closing a huge gap. And at this moment they are in the lead when it comes down the new standars, CSS3, HTML, Open Font Format. And also on the codes side they are doing good (they just need to add WebM).
Also IE9 will get a gread GUI probably, since Microsoft is a king in that area in my opinion (Windows Live, Microsoft Security Essentials). IE9 is far more promising than IE8 was.
