IE Won't Open???

I came across this computer b/c a girl had gotten the saser virus. I was able to remove the sasser virus and then updated her windows updates immediately so that it would not return and firewalled her network connection (with the xp option). However, her computer was still very slow and sluggish so I suspected spyware, malware etc. I then downloaded ad-aware and spybot and ran with the latest updates and updated her McAfee virus def. I ran a scan with McAfee and it found a few infected files which it was able to clean/delete. Two were in the system restore so I flushed it. Then when I tried to access IE it would come up very quickly and then terminate not showing in the process or applications tab in the task manager. I tried for several hours to figure out what was going wrong and what was stopping the connection (it was terminating any program once it attempted to connect to the internet ie: ad-aware, spybot). When I boot into safe mode w/ networking I am able to access IE which is what bothers me most. I reran ad-aware and spybot in safemode and ran a trend micro scan which all found nothing. I suspected maybe a CWS infection so I ran CWShredder. Unfortunetly, it didn't find anything and I don't see any clues in the hijackthis log (attached below) either(at least I think). Sorry for such a long description but I wanted to make sure ya'll knew what had been done. IE was working when she had the sasser virus but once that and all the spyware etc was cleaned up the problems started......

I brought up the process tab in Task manager while attempting to open IE to see if I could find a specific process that was jumping in when the connection was trying to be made. I clicked to the CPU usage tab to but them in order according to which is using the most CPU usage and I noticed csrss.exe jumping to the bottom every time. I know this is a critical windows file but could it be currupt? Thanks for any help - I'm really at a lose.

Since you clipped off the top of the log I have to ask: what version of HijackThis, IE and Windows are involved?

I haven't tried the reinstall of IE yet but I was thinking - would that fix the ad-aware and spybot problem? They also close when trying to access the net along with all her programs that attempt. Upon attempting any program is terminated... would a reinstall of IE fix these other problems? Or is there a more serious problem? I'll post back once I've attempted the IE reinstall.

 

That sounds like there could be some other virus active.
If repairing IE does not help do the following:
In HijackThis click Config > Misc Tools > put checkmarks in the two boxes under Generate StartUpList and then use that button. This will produce a textfile. Please post the content.

reinstall didn't work. However, messing around trying to figure out what has happened I changed her homepage to about:blank. This allowed IE to open but to about:blank. From here I was able to go any website. Ad-aware and spybot are both still terminating when trying to connect and aim or any other program does the same. Something is def. going on. I'm doing a free panda activescan - not sure if this will help but there def seems to be something lurking and I'm hoping something will find it! Here is the startup list Pieter. I forgot to mention - she has bullguard installed which she says she did not install. I don't know much about bullguard but I have a feeling it may be part of the problem especially considering I'm unable to unistall it from add/remove programs.... any idea on how to get rid of it on top of all this other stuff!?

Bullguard is spyware posing as an AntiVirus. It comes bundled with f.e. KaZaa.

As long as it is not active it won't do much harm.

Thanks Pieter. Unfortunetly that remover didn't find anything and neither did the scan following. However, I figured out which process was terminating the programs from connecting to the internet. It was McVSEscn.exe - part of McAfee's virus scan? When this process was ended I was able to connect to the net.... so I'm assuming that it was currupt. I unistalled McAfee from her computer and things are working fine! I'm not sure if I want to reinstall McAfee... I may recommend her to download another AV software. Could take a look at her most recent log now that everything is back up and running - thanks so much for the help
