Well, the best ones are getting closer and closer to each other. So it is really a question of testing what runs best on your machine. I had KIS, Avira IS, ESS and in the end NIS 2009 won the battle :)

I like to view the test results see whats improved or whats changed but they are not the deciding factor
on what Anti Virus software I choose to run on my computers, I only consider them to be a useful guide.

You have a point. These tests show what may happen if you come across such samples in the real world, but in reality, how many of us actually do if you practice safe computing?

Also I suspect the increase in false positives for some vendors means little to most people. I looked at the packages affected, but many I don't recognise simply because I don't have them installed, and it's likely neither will the average Joe. It has to be remembered these FPs have since been fixed.

These tests are useful to digest and compare results on a grand scale, but what really matters is how your chosen AV works in the day-to-day running of your computer.

Easy to discredit the tests but they do show some consistent pattern and is a good way to judge the all round performance of a AV.

What amuses me is how people look down at tests. until there product shines. then its like a 5 year old at show and tell must show everyone the results. :cautious:

Me personally wont be switching anywhere. but it is nice to see Norton getting with the program. tho I am surprised to see some company's dropped out guess they got sick of getting slammed in tests they could not pass.

    Nope. No changes here.
I might try Avira again sometime in 2011 when my current NOD32 license runs out.

In response to the OP about if someone would change his/her security setup just because some AVs on-demand results posted by an organization that dedicates to test AVs I would say absolutely NOT, I wouldn't.

I'm using NOD32 v. 3.0.672 alongside with ZAP 8.0.15 and I won't switch even when there are some people out there alleging that NOD32 is scoring lower each time those tests are performed.
I'm using Windows XP Pro with SP-3 and I don't visit dubious places (e.g.: porn sites or warez) and I don't run my computer as an Administrator but as a RESTRICTED USER even when sometimes I might find it to be annoying.

Besides, sometimes I think that the major organizations that test AVs are from Germany and the AV that got the higher scores is from a German company...go figure.

IBK has ranked Avira lower and he can never be accused of bias and if its any consolation, Russian site antimalware.ru also rated Avira tops so I don't think there is any case of bias here.

    Dear FAJO,

I take it you got to have lots of time since you keep posting here the whole day. Lucky you.
Unfortunately, I don't have enough time to be logged in here since I work so, let me go straight to the point.

I've read you've been criticising some AVs, especially ESET which I without any regrets I use. I started using ESET since 2005 thus, I've been a loyal user of that AV solution for about 3 years in a row and I can tell you with 100% of confidence that I haven't got a single virus/malware infection so far.
You may wonder why? Well, I won't tell you that I'm the luckiest guy alive or that I don't use the Internet at all because neither one is true.

I do however, use COMON SENSE, that is the real thing, comon sense.
I don't think that if you do practice bad computer habits any AV or Anti-Spyware is gonna save your day regardless how high ranked that AV is on the lists of some AV tests organizations.

How many users run their computers as Administrators just because the incovenience of running as Restricted Users ? (at least on Win XP Pro SP-3 which I run).

How many users use torrents and P2P to transfer and receive files from untrusted sources?

How many users use chat programs to receive files from unstrusted sources?

How many users open e--mail attachments despite comon sense tells them not to open attachments even from known sources?

How many users download pirated software and key-generators from WAREZ sites known to harbor SPYWARE, TROJAN HORSES and VIRUSES just because they think it's not worth paying to get software legally?

How many users surf PORN sites just because they want to get off by watching that kind of stuff?

And those same users come here with the PARANOIA about needing HIPS.
Yes, HIPS, that is something that has been put in fashion by some people now. I remember back in 1995 when the acronym HIPS was totally unknown to many and now, because the bad habits of some users, that technology has been incorporated into software firewalls when we all know that FIREWALLS are to protect the perimeter from HACKERS not to be HIPS. There is an INSANE race of firewall vendors trying to keep up with a guy known as Matousec and his so called “leak tests” instead of focusing on making better firewalls to block intruders from breaking in to your computer.

My apologies to LWM, Ronjor, Bubba, and other moderators because I went a little bit off topic here but I wanted to clarify why I think the way I do and let people know that I don't run to switch security applications running on my PC just because some posted results show that the AV I'm using “apparently” detects less malware than other AVs used by some other people.

    Have a wonderful day,

    Carlos

I guess I'm lucky enough to be able to use the web thought the day. sense I'm not having to worry about a Anti-virus crashing my mainframe. but that's another story aint it.

I personally have been using Eset sense 99. it in fact is still on some of the server systems I run (Yet to deiced if I'm pulling it or not)

As for Common sense well In the 20+ years I have now had computers. I have yet to have any problem with virus I simply keep one there to prevent as many users and I have valuable data on the drives and would rather not chance losing it. :D

Now on a simple matter of Fact. It don't matter how safe of a "browsing habits you make" some day some how you could be infected whether it be from a Drive by download a active X script or anything else. you just have to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.. for me I rather have a SMALL of chance as possible of this happening. :D

Btw. yes tests can and do show a pattern with a AV. some have CONSISTENTLY dropped over the months. my post don't weigh on one test but many. also tests are NOT the only thing Customer service is another, Having a AV totally bring a corporate network to its knees not once but MANY times in the recent months is Unacceptable to me. :cautious:

Didn't you realize WW2 is over? Innsbruck and AV-C are located in Austria. ;)

    Cheers
