    1. Kaspersky has the best scanner.
    2. McAfee isn't far behind #1. Runs smooth too.
    3. NOD32 has an excellent balance between detection and performance.
    4. Panda is very good but runs heavy. Bitdefender may be a better pick for #4.

Signature database = Kaspersky + McAfee + NOD32 + Panda + Bitdefender + the rest (doubles removed of course)
Heuristic scanning = NOD32 without the false positives.
    Protection shield.

And that would be my favorite AV scanner, I don't have a name for it yet

EDIT : forgot to mention this.

Absolutely silence in the background without disturbing messages for
    1. full automatic updating of the software
    2. full automatic updating of the signature database (daily)
    3. scheduled scanning of the computer
A popup screen when an infection occurs, to remove it.

That's what the user WANTS, but does NOT get from the security industry. :'(
I know what I want, but I can't find it.

I am surprised that You didn't include Avast! in your list and from the stats I have seen on the net at various test sites, Avast! has a fair percentage of users competitive with the others you listed.

    my opinion
if kav had a better proactive, exploit detection and less resources use
it would be #1 with no competetion
maybe we will get that in v2006

I though Polls were *supposed* to be confined to THIS category, at Wilder's forums. o_O

as far as detction rates go, KAV is unparalled likewise the same can be said nod32 and its heuristics. mcafee is a fair mixture of both. and panda is good/ok but its given me problems, its slow, and I havent had much luck with its truprevent technologoes. I voted for KAV tho I personally use nod32 as performance is an issue.

I now only uses Avast! anti-virus coz it's the only free one that I think are more advanced than the others. The WebShield and Network Shield are great and the auto update is fast and boot-time scanning serves me well and it's also fast. :)

But I think for those using an older system AVG is great, it is light and works fine.

I have not tried yet any other anti-virus. :doubt:

I chose not to vote because I tend to change my mind often.....to me there is no "best" AV - only good ones, and all of the AVs in the poll are good. ;)

    I second that :)
I also change my mind often and it's my intention to get rid all of them and use ShadowUser to replace all my AV/AS/AT/AK scanners.
Maybe it works, maybe not, time will prove it.
