I use HTTPS Everywhere, but hadn't seen the settings for the SSL Observatory. It sounds like it does certificate checking like "Perspectives" (plugin for Firefox). I think it's a good idea since there have been cases of certificate forgery recently.

I was under the impression that it shared your results (sites that use HTTPS) with them so that they could improve their product. So the bottom line really is if you want to help out, and trust them, then use it. If not, don't.

If you want to help even more use HTTPS Finder as well, and turn the SSL Observatory on.

I admit, personally I have it turned off. I'm the paranoid type.

It sends copies of the SSL certificates to the EFF to help detect MitM attacks, if you open up the HTTPS everywhere options and go to SSL observatory tab it gives an explanation of what it does.
