Even if it's marketing, heck M00n, it's just another day in the web business. No biggie really, it's not like MS hasn't had their share of "independent lab result" schemes. They all do it, for all we know this relative doesn't even exist and the story never happened, lol.

I can't help feeling you haven't read the blog carefully if you've come away with the impression that it "was nothing but marketing".

Honestly, it wasn't much of anything! haha

Some guy basically told some girl that Firefox was a good browser and set it up for her and told her she should use it. And *gasp* she took the developer seriously.

He could have said "IE6 is actually really great let me set it up for you" and I'm sure she would have used it because he's a dev. I don't really get why he published it lol if I made an article every time I got someone to use Chrome I'd be wrapping up a novel.

And yet every time MS wants to tout their browser, they head straight to those particular people...look, I'm not going to start up another argument on another browser. We all feel how we feel and live happily ever after. As Hungry said, the whole thing is much ado about nothing. The guy should have just kept his keys off the keyboard and his mouth shut, and this would have all been avoided, lol.

From malware yes, from prying eyes and greedy ad dollars, nope :D

They just inform when NSS Labs release new studies about browser security showing IE performing well. There's a marketing strategy of course when they use the information and announce it.

But that doesn't mean the tests made by NSS Labs are flawed.

I never said they were flawed, and don't believe they are. I do however question the relationship between them. But, again, that's not for this discussion. This is about a poor decision to make an article that was just bound to stir some pots.

Where's the relationship? Microsoft isn't even in the partner's section of NSS Labs page. I think Microsoft is just using the information honestly provided by NSS Labs test results for marketing. Pretty normal business practice.

    There are plenty of criticisms.

LOL, the criticism isn't on the empiric grounds of what was tested, but on the philosophical grounds of I doubt that what was tested reflects so much on browser security.

I quite agree that it reflects for the average user. The majority of malware seems to infect after download.

Actually it's on both. The methods were questions as well as the conclusions. The excerpt I provided was from Wikipedia since that was a huge article and I didn't want to make anyone search for the relevant info.

NSS Labs properly addressed all of them:

Lord, what have I started? Anyway, yes, I look upon the NSS/MS situations with skepticism. Doesn't mean anyone needs to agree with me, I'll sleep alright tonight if I'm the only one ;) :)

That article... is a laugh haha.

Not really interested in a long debate though. Reading it was kinda funny.

You know, they make conclusions upon real data, not on "omg my browser wasn't beat in pown to own yay!".

BTW, read the date of the article. Some info might be inaccurate now but it was accurate when the criticisms you quoted were made.

I'm not trying to say they're wrong or that they're being paid off or something.

Reading it is just kinda funny. It reads like poor damage-control and I could probably talk a lot about my issues with just about everything there. I mean the wording alone...
