    Hi there.
A friend has a HUGE viral problem, including the sending of email all over the world. I want to help him tomorrow so I tried to make a DOS boot disk as I did many times before XP became standard.

How do I get a floppy to be boot-able for an xp system?

If this is not possible, and F8 is somehow not working, what are my options?

    [Remark]
The friend is a first time user and told me all this over the phone, I'll go there tomorrow but want to be prepared.
    [/remark]

    Regards

    Frans

Ask him to contact his computer's manufacturers' tech support hotline. Does his com have a recovery program?

    Hello Nadirah,

    Thanks for your reply.

This is an old PIII with no connection to the shop. The shop went down.

Total recovery is sonething I try when all else failes. So this is no option now.
All I need is a good working BOOT disk with CD support.
I'm sure somebody will have an image somewhere?

Normally i did a format a: /s in DOS but that does not work anymore with XP aperently.
I did manage to make a bootable disk with the Spinrite program, so perhaps this is enough, but the guy told me he could not get into safe mode. But this could be a first time user problem.
I'll see it when I get there.

I'll go prepared with TDS portexplorer and all the other goodies from DiamondCS plus this spinrite program. Off course I will remove all misery with AV software by Norman and ad-aware AND spybot.
but for all this to work I need to get ino a clean machine. That's why I need a boot disk (a:) or (C:) but the latter I never tried before...

    Greetings from The Netherlands

    Frans

A suggestion from me: Try Spinrite from www.grc.com, maybe it could help bring your friends computer back to life. :)
If all fails, then maybe getting a new Pentium 4 would help.

Just take your PC to his place and slave his hard drive off your system, when this is done boot up your PC and run a scan on the slaved drive.

When complete, reboot your PC and run a second scan on the slaved drive.

This works well at my shop.

    Cheers :D

    Bootable Windows CD: http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

But just for fighting virusses on an xp system, get bitdefender's bootable cd version.
