This really isn't new. I have Apps turned off. I have no use for them.

Same here, it is the best choice for me. I don't use Facebook for other purposes than to occasionally keep in touch with some old friends. But to be fair, this solution is mentioned in the article :)

I just don't put private information such as my address, my phone number, my social security or credit card information on facebook. I honestly don't know what kind of stupid person would do that.

When I talk about private information on Facebook, I don't mean sensitive information like the ones you just mentioned, but standard information you might share (photos, likes, status, etc.). That kind of information can be easily harvested by apps.

My status that I went to the bar last night and hanged out with my friends is hardly private. Heck, I was around at least 50-100 people, the location was not private at all to begin with....
I hardly find anything posted on Facebook as private. That's why I was overly sarcastic in my previous message.
I don't see a big issue about this. If you don't want the world to know where you are then 1) don't post it on facebook and 2) stay home.

I also treat everything posted to Facebook as public, so I agree with you. However, the article was not about your friends seeing your Facebook data, but about their installed apps. Given the fact that not everyone likes the idea of their data being harvested by third party apps, the article proposed a solution to that.

Depends. If you have friends who use Facebook, there is nothing you can do to prevent them from posting about you or pictures of you on Facebook. This goes for anywhere on the Internet as well

Thanks for the article, I was wondering, how I can get tagged in photos. All disabled now.
I wish I could do that, but I use FB as an universal login, so I have to keep it on. :(

Problem happens when a company pays Facebook for pictures or an Application that's running on Facebook. They then take pictures of your daughter and Photoshop them or just plain post them as advertising banners for porn sites and on porn sites themselves. Hence there are even worse people that would take even worse things from your pictures and put them even worse places. Next time you see a porn banner on a website that just flashes up, notice how the pictures generally just normal teenage girls. These may have been taken from Facebook. This is one of the biggest problems.

I also believe tagging is being used and stored for law enforcement and advanced CCTV camera technology they will be rolled out soon. Tagging your friends faces in those little boxes on multiple pictures from multiple people build a pretty good database for facial detection software. Multiple people, tagging your real name to your real face. Its like the governments and the security agency's don't even have to try anymore. How do you think Facebook makes so much money?

If you find it useless, then it's up to you not to use it. However for other people it might have its uses; in my case it is about keeping in touch with some friends and knowing exactly how to configure it, in order to be able to teach others.

I don't have a Facebook, but you would be surprised the social value. That's why normal people use it, and if you don't have it you miss out on the social value that all the others gain.

Block apps > block app invites > do not share apps others use.
