a long time ago i come across a small program or command (i dont remember which) that would restore windows to factory defaults, just as if it had been freshly installed but kept all drivers iam not 100% certain but i think it was on XP and it worked as expected. does anybody remember a program or command that does the same, only this time for any version of windows later than XP.

i know everybody is going to suggest to simply format and reinstall but this method, if possible would save a LOT of time and hassle.

I think this function is only available in Windows 8.

Edit: it is the "refresh" recovery function in Windows 8. See, for example, http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/windows-8-recovery.html.

"Refresh is similar to booting into safe mode and trying to repair your Windows, using the sfc command on Windows XP, inserting your CD and then letting Windows fix corrupted system files by copying from the disc, or by using the recovery console in Windows 7, which then accesses the 100MB hidden partition where core system files are saved for emergency. Refresh is all of these combined." ... "You will lose programs installed manually. All your settings and tweaks will also be restored to default."

So, perhaps the sfc command is what the question refers to.

USA still the best. But barely.
I think this feature is only available in Windows 10 or 11.
