There is no way currently within DSA to configure it to not start up after booting the OS. This has been confirmed by Privacyware Tech support.
They also added that I may want to research whether there is a way to do this
at the OS level as it might be possible.
    Any comments or suggestions?
    Thanks

    Hello newbino :)

DSA autostarts via a registry key located in HKLM/Run. You can easily disable DSA startup by deleting it's key in this location -

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

You can start it anytime from a shortcut in start menu, when needed.

Don't forget to backup your registry before you do this, just in case you need the key back.

    Cheers.

Thanks Seer, your suggestion makes perfect sense. Now there is an additional twist  on one side I am looking to be able to disable DSA at startup on occasion, but generally I would keep it on.

Backing up the registry would not work, as I am still un/installing new software (recent os install) so I need to keep it flexible and not anchored in time.
Is there a way to backup the single registry key?

    Export the registry key.

    yes, but how? :)

if I select just the DSA key and then >file > export
the regkey contains the whole of
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
including various other apps that startup with windows that I would like to exclude from the key itself

Uh, lets not get ridiculous. Just get a startup items util like Startup or Sysinternal's Autoruns. No need to manually muck with the registry for such quotidian fare.

DSA also has a driver (pwipf2) that you can manually start/stop from the device manager if you wish. I'm not sure if the firewall element still blocks when the gui is off.
