    @adrenaline7...
    Once updating was disabled it was discovered that no updates had occurred?
    Where's the mystery?

    for me, as i said, it's just the bolded part, which is:
    the only difference is that i used "autoruns" instead of msconfig.

    AFAIK Iron is a fork of Chromium.

    Chromium is the open source project. Iron takes that source code, adds their own bit of code/removes bits of code, and then releases it.

    I don't know the definition of a fork. On a guess? Probably.

    I thought it was when two almost identical releases were made from the same original source code, like Open Office & Libre Office.

    I don't think that the definition of 'fork' would apply to something like Comodo Dragon & Chromium, but Iron's Chromium roots are evident when you set it as default & in the menu pop-up it claims to be 'Chromium' rather than Iron.

    I don't think they have to be similar for it to be a fork. As long as it's taken from source code and has code added to it that isn't committed to the original project.

    If you want a customizable browser go for Opera or Firefox.

    OK. I reckon originally that would have made Firefox a fork of SeaMonkey.

    Without implying anything disparaging ;) , I'd think of Iron more as a tweak of Chromium code than as a fork.
