Well... that's a way of seeing it. :argh:

But, that way, anyone wanting to get Google Chrome this way, will have to perform more than just one step. People will always need to find out what is the newest version, in a website like File Hippo or Softpedia.

A URL with the most current version number would be a great help and make things a tiny faster. :D

I may have found a solution for this problem, though. I'll need to find out if it actually works. :D

your idea with Sandboxie was well thought but the Chrome exe would not launch.

    Sorry... :D

I forgot an extra step. :D. Let me do that inside Sandboxie, and I'll let you know in a moment. There's been a while, and I don't if there's any extra files in the chrome.7z.

    Wait a moment...

    OK.

Once you extract chrome.7z, you probably have what I have:

A folder named chrome > a folder named Chrome-bin. Inside folder Chrome-bin, there are two executables plus one other folder. Cut and paste everything from that folder into Chrome-bin. Then delete the empty folder.

Chrome should run fine now. It's running here.

i find this is the easiest way for me.
and i can use Winrar Unplugged (portable) which i like better than having to install Sandboxie to extract those files.
(btw, 7-Zip portable works as well.)
    ----------------------------------------
    good tip there mrpink!
    --------------------
maybe this URL here can help:
    --------------------------------------------
    to sum it up:
    i like doing this better than getting it from PortableApps for a couple of reasons;
you can get the newest version faster than PortableApps, and i save the bandwidth of the folks at PortableApps.
Google can afford the bandwidth! ;)

If you use the stable build you probably won't see much difference. If you use the dev like i do you'll end up updating it manually yourself,PortableApps.com are usually 5-6 updates behind o_O

i use the stable release only.
the main reason i'm doing this is to save PortableApps some bandwidth.

i don't mind 'leeching' from them once in awhile for small downloads but not for 20-30 stable releases of Chrome every year. ;)

i figure 20 times 25 megs per year.
    maybe more.

that's a lot of bandwidth if thousands of people are doing the same. :)

Little tip how to get Chrome´s standalone installer ( without Google Updater) ,credits goes to Jyo...One should add "?standalone=1" to URL address,so the dl address should be :

    xxtp://www.google.com/chrome/eula.html?standalone=1

Updating Chrome = repeating the whole process by hand.

yes, but you can not extracting anything from the installer in your link.
i only get a file called "102~" that i can't do anything with.

the installer in the link provided by mrpink works if you extract it with 7-Zip or WinRar.

i think what jaodsvuda is trying to say is that when you download the exe from that link which ends with "?standalone=1", you needn't to extract anything. all you have to do is just install it, so this way it won't contain the updater, no?

agreed. if portableapps is a website that'll go down just because of that much bandwith use, then no reason to keep it up & running.

I will have to come back and read this thread when I have more time. I used chrome for a couple of weeks because I read about the sandbox and that many prefer it as a browser over IE & FF, but I unchecked google update on startup in "msconfig" because I try to keep the system very lean and looking in process monitor google update was constantly using resources. Once I unchecked it I didn't notice until I ran secunia PSI that I was running an outdated and vulnerable version of Chrome.

If I can use Chrome without 'google update' in startup and running on my system full time then I will use it, if not back to FF.

it's too bad Chrome does not allow for manually checking and/or updating.
well, you can check and update manually, if the auto-update hasn't done it before you do, that is. ;)

i 'solved' that problem by using a portable version.
of course, you gotta check once in awhile to see if a new version is out.

It's under about:plugins and you can also probably disable it under msconfig.
