I received a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 as a gift. I've been installing lots of programs to it, but it seems I need to "root" it for some of the best programs to work. However rooting voids the warranty so I want to make a backup of the device first.

Problem: When I connect it to my laptop via the USB cable, DiskMgmt and regular backup programs (e.g. Drive Snapshot) do not see it. I've used Samsung Kies to backup the data, but I don't think it's a full backup that could restore the OS too.

Is there any program similar to Acronis, Image for Windows, ShadowProtect, Macrium Reflect, ... that can make a backup of a Samsung Tab and also restore the backup if needed?

In Mint 11 I could see a folder structure for the tablet device, but the folders did not include boot, bin, lib or other folders I would expect from a system partition. Also, when the tablet went to sleep (after 60 seconds of idle time) Mint lost the connection partially (non-empty folders I opened were shown as empty). And, I'm familiar with imaging tools available for linux. (Image for Linux and Clonezilla work as boot disks, and I'm not sure how to install partimage in Mint...).

I have no experience with an android tablet. If will try however this:

1- Boot from Conezilla CD while tablet attached to mPC and running and try to make an image.

2- Boot from an acronis CD and make a raw image on sector per sector basis.

But the question is how to verify the image, you can,t verify unless you restore it and that,s too risky.

I think as tablets become more popular, we might see many new software to image the tablets but ATM it,s hard to find such a software.

As far as I know u cant backup befor root.
Ive rooted my HTC desire. If I ever want it back to state be4 root, I just flash HTC's original rom, and bam - phone will be back to original non-rooted state. I think it works the same way with your tablet.
