It all depends on who's using this HIPS or BB and what their skill level is.
There is no one answer fits all for this question.

Well if the person using this HIPS or BB is you, then I'd say go for the HIPS as I'm confident in your ability to respond correctly to the alerts.
If the question was "Which is more powerful, a HIPS or a BB?" then I'd have said generally a HIPS.

Yeah, I'd say HIPS is more secure than BB. But BB is nag-free so I'd go for that. :)

If you have a good HIPS that also has a good whitelist it makes things a whole lot easier.

I'd say that's basically what a BB is. :D Threatfire comes to mind...

Problem with a whitelist is that usually threatgates such as your browser are whitelisted. Thus, using the whitelist allows all actions of the browser... I don't know about you but the primary value of HIPS for me is this restriction of trusted, yet vulnerable processes. i don't run untrusted software.

But whitelisting is useful as long as you manually remove vectors of attack.

I'm talking about known programs that are allowed to run under restriction and noted changes. I'm not suggesting full run capabilities for browsers. That would just be reckless. You can still whitelist apps and have it monitored for changes.

SSM 2.4 - Didn't like MD 2.7.1 so I gave this a try and it's working great so far.
Easy to use too, you can put it into learning mode for each individual executable which helps a lot, the interface is easy to use too.
I'm just hoping it's still secure, despite being abandoned some time ago..

I might give OSSS a try when it comes out of beta.
