I'm new to this whole spyware thing, but a friend told me about how spyware slows down your comp and is turning into the 'new internet threat'. Long story short, I heard about hijackthis, and since I can't read the log I would appreciate some help on this.

(I scanned with ad-aware first and it deleted everything except for TV Media, this 'problem' keeps coming back)

    Logfile of HijackThis v1.97.7

I know it does take someone with specialized knowledge, but how long does one usually have to wait for someone to read the log?

    Re: Hijackthis log (solved?)

Ok, call me impatient, but I looked up a hijackthis tutorial...

    I would check the following:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=216.123.113.218:80

Because I don't have a proxy server... unless you need a proxy for DSL, or the zonealarms firewall creates a proxy.

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {707E6F76-9FFB-4920-A976-EA101271BC25} - (no file)
It says to always check these if you don't recognize it.

    O2 - BHO: MyWay Search Assistant BHO - {04079851-5845-4dea-848C-3ECD647AA554} - C:\Program Files\MyWay\SrchAstt\1.bin\MYSRCHAS.DLL - Deleted manually

    O16 - DPF: {084F552D-19EB-4668-9788-984CBC781A8F} (AsyncDownloader Class) - http://survey.otxresearch.com/Preloader.dll

And That would be about it... (I took some of the programs from the startup maually according to the links in the tutorial)

Someone please tell me if the ones I selected should stay or go... thanks.

    Hi SumGuy,

I noticed you have the bing.exe file in the RunServices. This is what it may be:
    PestPatrol
    Symantec

Could you do a search of your hard drive for the bling.exe file, zip up a copy of it (password protect it and use the word infected as the password) and email the zipped copy to these two addresses so it can be put in for detection.

pieterATwilderssecurity.org (replace the AT with an @)
    submit@diamondcs.com.au

In the body of the email message, please state that the password is "infected" and include a link to this thread, so they will be able to find the thread easily. Thank you.

Next, upload the bling.exe for a scan at Kaspersky.

    ====

Since your last log, you have since rebooted and AdAware finished what it was going to remove upon reboot, and you've probably already removed some items yourself. So I am not sure now what may still be there that needs fixed, but I'll go ahead and list what needs to be fixed from your last log.

First try and uninstall 'MyWay' through the Add/Remove Programs.

In HijackThis, place a check beside the following items.
Close ALL browsers and any open programs/windows, except HijackThis, and click *Fix checked:

(if you do not recognize this IP and your ISP did not have you set it up this way, then it could well be part of the bling.exe virus)

Make sure you have Hidden Files and Folders Viewable
Click Start > My Computer >Select the Tools menu >click Folder Options >Select the View Tab.
Under the "Hidden files and folders" heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
UN-check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option. Then click Yes.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key just before windows begins to load.

Find and delete the following listed in bold:
C:\Program Files\TV Media <-- delete the folder if you haven't already
C:\Program Files\MyWay <-- the folder if you haven't removed it already.
bling.exe <-- if the Kaspersky scan has identified it as infected, and after you've emailed it to us, please.

Reboot your computer normally, and do a FULL system scan at one of these on-line scan sites: Free Services

You may have to (if you've chosen to fix the R1 line above) reset your websettings in IE -> Tools -> Internet Options ->Connctions -> Lan Settings -> and remove the check (if present) for using a Proxy Server.

Use the Disk cleanup Utility to clean out your Temp folders. Disk Cleanup Utility

Next, download, install, and bring up-todate the most recent version of Spybot S&D and AdAware6. Download links and instructions can be found here
Then do a scan with each program.

Once you have finished the above, please repost a new hijackthis log here in this thread, along with the scan results on the 'bling.exe' file please.

    Regards,

    snap

    First, thanks for helping out....

I had to go through quite the hassle to send that copy of the bling.exe file... as soon as I would click on the file Norton would throw it into the quarantine. saying it was w32.spybot.worm

Then, I deleted MyWay and TVMedia folders... and lastly, ad-aware was clean... and spybot told me I have cleverIEHooker.jeired (this one comes back fairly often) but told me it was cleaned.

    Hi SumGuy,

Thank you for submitting the file. :) Were you able to upload it for a scan at Kaspersky? Would be interesting to see what the results would be.

Then you can delete the bling.exe file since it is obviously a malware file.

Please post another log here in this thread so we can check and make sure it is clean.

    Regards,

This was the result of the scan on kapersky (whatever)...

    bling.exe - infected by Backdoor.SdBot.oy

Funny that Norton called it w32.spybot.worm... Those were two completely different viruses from what I could tell. I take it that this is a relatively new viruso_O Seeing as I can't find any information about it other then its name.

    Anyway, here's a new scan

Does this mean that I got a virus before it even became publico_O

Last time was the w32.spybot.worm, and I had that about a week before the virus defiinitions came out to detect it.... and that one damn near made me have to reinstall windows.

    Hi SumGuy,

It sounds like you got a 'variant' of the SDBot virus. (Thank you Gavin for checking it for us.)

Your last log looked clean, SumGuy. Just these few to clean up. For some reason the 016's didnt want to completely be removed, and that sometimes happens. They weren't 'bad' but also were not needed and recommended by some of the Experts for removal.

You can try fixing them in Hijackthis while in safe mode.

Boot your computer into safe mode by tapping the F8 key just before windows begins to load.

Then with all windows closed, and only Hijackthis open, place a check beside the following and click *Fixed checked:

Reboot your computer normally, and post a new log if you wish.

Here are some steps to follow to help tighten your security and prevent future infection:
Why did I get infected in the first place?

And make sure to visit Microsoft's Update Site to keep all Security Patches and Critical Updates current for IE6 and your operating system.
