hijackthis log - please help

    Hi there,

    First of all, thanks in advance for helping -- this looks like a great resource, and it's nice to know there's still plenty of helpful people in the world.

    I've got, I think, a large amount of spyware on my system. One of the things I've noticed most has been constant transfer of internet data to yuhmee.com. Also I can sometimes not connect to the Internet until I go into my task manager and end processes until I find the right one (i think it's ra32.exe) and then the Internet will work.

    I just ran Spybot S&D, I've run AdAware within the past few days. Below is my log file.

    You have a problem there with one of the aflooder viruses that actually infects the system32 folder itself

    lets deal with that first
    click Start->Run and paste this:

    rundll32 C:\WINDOWS\System32:xaooacd.dll,Uninstall

    if you get an error message, cannot find rundll or similar then start/run type cmd and paste the line in the black box that comes up and press return

    then
    Download LSPfix here: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm anmd save it to the desktop where it is easily available to you, it will be needed very soon

    Run hijackthis, tick these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

    Now
    Run LSP FIX, you will see a list of files in the left hand pane and possibly some in the right hand pane. first tick the " I know what I'm doing box" then Look in the left hand pane and select all instances of inetadpt.dll and only that file and nothing else and move them to the right hand remove pane, then just press finish
    then

    Reboot into safe mode by following instructions here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406
    then as some of the files or folders you need to delete may be hidden do this:
    Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

    Delete these files

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\update.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\winupdate.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\dxjmmxl.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\WebInstall.exe
    c:\windows\system32\inetadpt.dll

    and Delete these folders

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\f~a\
    C:\Program Files\WebSavingsfromEbates

    then
    Reboot normally &

    Download and unzip or install these programs/applications if you haven't already got them. If you have them, then make sure they are updated and configured as described

    Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de
    AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

    Run Sybot S&D

    After installing, first press Online, press search for updates, then tick the updates it finds, then press download updates. Beside the download button is a little down pointed arrow, select one of the servers listed. If it doesn't work or you get an error message then try a different server

    Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, press 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED.

    then reboot &

    Run ADAWARE

    Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
    the current ref file should read at least 01R273 21.03.2004 or a higher number/later date

    Then ........

    Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
    From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

    then......

    click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

    then.........

    go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ...........then........"Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

    then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

    Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

    When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press next and then say yes to the prompt, do you want to remove all these entries.

    reboot again

    then post a new hijackthis log to check what is left

    Hi Derek,

    Thanks so much for your help. I proceeded through most of the steps without problems. However, most of the files you told me to delete after rebooting in Safe mode (update.exe, winupdate.exe, etc) were not there. I did check Show hidden files and unchecked the hiding of files, so I'm not sure if they just weren't there or were otherwise hidden. Anyway, here's my updated HijackThis log.

    it looks ok now, frequently the bad files get removed by adaware but if you haven't configured it right as I described it can leave the registry entries behind. we removed those using HJT

    The important ones look like they have gone and provided you are happy that the problems are gone

    only a couple of things left to do

    1.
    Turn off system restore by following instructions here

    That will purge the restore folder and clear any malware that has been put in there. Then reboot & then re-enable sytem restore & create a new restore point.

    2. read this http://forums.techguy.org/t208517/s.html for info on how to tighten your security settings and how to help prevent future attacks.
    On this page you will find links to Javacool's SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard. Get them both and check for updates frequently.

    The Immunize feature in Spybot used in conjunction with SpywareBlaster , SpywareGuard and weekly scans with Spybot and Adaware will go a long way toward keeping your PC free of these pests.
    It also contains links for IE-SPYAD that puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone, so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

    And links to a browser & security test site to test for exploits that might let these baddies in to your computer

    Important!: ALWAYS check for updated detections and referencefiles before scanning with Spybot and Adaware. And be sure to check for updates to SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard on a weekly basis.

    3. make sure you are up to date with windows updates, running XP without SP1 and all the other critical updates leaves you open to all sorts of security leaks and exploits
