My computer is a Fujitsu laptop. I don’t want any Fujitsu stuff that I don’t need.
Not that comp literate. I use Cisco VPN at school.

I run, have updated, and scanned with; Spybot S&D, Adware 6 and Norton AV Pro and firewall. I just loaded and ran Hijack This.
Adware 6 shows 30 processes running (without anything running that I know about). About a week ago I had 28 and I don’t recall doing anything that would have added a program.

    Logfile of HijackThis v1.97.7

Is running Hijack without unzipping it a security problem?
Norton shows many open ports. How do I manage the ports?

    Hi Cool Breeze,

Running HijackTHis from a zip folder is only a risk when you decide to fix something. In that case the program will not be able to make a backup. It makes those in the folder hijackthis. exe is in.

You can look up which startups (listed under O4) are necessary here: http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php

Another site where you might get rid of some running processes: http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

The good news is: no spyware in sight. :)

    Regards,

    Pieter

have you got any firewall??Firewalls work by allowing desirable traffic to pass through and forbidding everything else. moreover there are some online port scans .. if also there may be some ports open and not attended.. firewalls are built in such way that once ports are scanned (passing thru them) and if any port is open.. they create a rule for that for future..
i assume u have firewall... but if u dun have... maybe you can get valuable information here
    i personally feel..
1.ZoneAlarm-> program based firewall (if you go for program based firewalls... you should do that if you are not so sure which rules to set for which program...)
2.Kerio ->rule based firewall(if you are perfectly sure about your rules.. and computer)
    thx

Looking at the list of firewalls indacates that Zone alarm is popular. Since I have Norton firewall, if at any point I decide to spring for another $50 bucks would the 2 be compatible or just redundent. BTW the bas*&%S that process the rebates said i didn't send in my receipt (lies, lies, & more lies).
