Everytime I start my computer my homepage is changed and IE shortcuts are added to my desktop. I've run the most recent version of Spybot - it identifies a few things - I fix them but, they always come back after startup. I've used HijackThis and deleted some of the obvious files that shouldn't be there but, these also come back after start up too.

Here is the log of HijackThis after running Spybot.

I was going to delet the "Global Startup: system32.exe" thinking that may be causing the problem but, I thought I'd better ask someone who knows first.

    Thanks for you help.

    O4 - Global Startup: sytem32.exe

Reboot into safe mode by following instructions here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406
then as some of the files or folders you need to delete may be hidden do this:
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

    Delete these files

    C:\WINDOWS\system\systeminit.exe
    search for & delete sytem32.exe <<<<<<<look carefully and you will see it's SYTEM32 not system, it's probably either in c:\windows\system32 folder or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

    and Delete these folders
    C:\PROGRA~1\TEAMTH~1\ >>>>>> the folder with Sect dumb.exe
    C:\PROGRA~1\SCRBON~1\
    then
    Reboot normally &

Download and unzip or install these programs/applications if you haven't already got them. If you have them, then make sure they are updated and configured as described

    Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de
    AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

    Run Sybot S&D

After installing, first press Online, press search for updates, then tick the updates it finds, then press download updates. Beside the download button is a little down pointed arrow, select one of the servers listed. If it doesn't work or you get an error message then try a different server

Next, close all Internet Explorer and OE windows, press 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove all it finds that is marked in RED.

    then reboot &

    Run ADAWARE

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate".
the current ref file should read at least 01R275 25.03.2004 or a higher number/later date

    Then ........

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

    then......

click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

    then.........

go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ...........then........"Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press next and then say yes to the prompt, do you want to remove all these entries.

    reboot again

then post a new hijackthis log to check what is left

Thank you very much. It looks like the instructions you gave me did the trick.

    I deleted "systeminit.exe". I couldn't find "sytem32.exe" but, I did find "backup 20040326-132536-925-sytm32.exe" so I deleted it.

I couldn't find either of the folders you wanted me to delete - one of the had the "Sect dumd.exe". I searched manually and with the search program and could find the folders or Sect dumb.exe.(?)

I ran Spybot and then Adware as you instructed. Here is the latest HijackThis log.

Let me know if there is anything else I should do.

    Thank You!

it would be better if you can try one more time to look for the folders, they tend to have a filke in them that reinstalls this pest otherwise. It's possible taht adaware/spybot have got them though

    C:\PROGRAM FILES \TEAMTH~1\ >>>>>> the folder with Sect dumb.exe
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\SCRBON~1

the folders are both in the c:\program files folder and the first 6 letters of the folder will be team th for one of them and scrbon for the other but we have no way of knowing what, so a manual search is needed not a find files files in windows search

I manually searched all of the folders in my Programs Files folder, three times, and still cannot find the folders you specified:

    C:\PROGRAM FILES \TEAMTH~1\ >>>>>> the folder with Sect dumb.exe
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\SCRBON~1

Should I just assume that Spybot or Adware got them?

Now, I did not look at each and every file or program, just at the folders.

Thanks again. I really do appreciate your help.

I seem to have a lot of "rinning processes". Can I shut some of those down to increase my system performance? Which ones can I shut down and ,briefly, how do I do it?

Sincerely, Thanks a bunch - you've been a great help

log looks clear of baddies now

all the running processes that I can see are either system files that are needed/ antivirus protection or specific drivers/applications to make the keyboard/touchpad etc work
the only optional ones to disable are music match and real update
