Ran SPYBOTSD first (twice and restarted as requested), also ran SpywareDoctor. Still having popups starting and closing Explorer even with no home page or other browsing activity. Note that the nameserver in the logfile is my ISP's.

    Here's my log:

You still have loads of malware. I suggest you proceed as follows:

First, run an online virus scan at Panda Active Scan

Next, download the latest version of Ad-Aware at http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download/

After installing AAW, and before running the program, you NEED to FIRST update the reference file following these instructions.

    Now do the following:

    - Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweak > Scanning Engine:
check: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

    - Under Ad-aware 6 > Settings (Gear at the top) > Tweak > Cleaning Engine:
Check: "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

    Press "Scan Now"

    - Check option "Use Custom scanning options"
    - Check option "Activate In-Depth Scan"
    - Press "Select drives\folders to scan"
    - Select the active partition which is usually C:

Now press "Next" to let Ad-aware scan your drives...
It will find a number of "bad" files and registry keys.
Right-click in that pane and choose "select all"

    Now press "Next" again.
It will ask you whether you'd like to remove all checked items. Click OK.

    Finally, close Ad-Aware, and reboot.
That ought to get rid of most of your spyware.

When you've done all that, restart your computer, re-run Hijack This, and show us a fresh log.
There will be more to do!

    Cheers,

You guys are great, I really appreciate the help.

OK, Ran Panda and AdAware, both found stuff, AdAware required re-boot, did so, ran again, looked pretty clean, ran one more time, then found 5 errors, seemed to fix, and the popups seem to be gone... but here's the Logfile which still has some suspicious entries to me... like 016 ...http://download.overpro.com/WildApp.cab??

First, would you please send a copy of the C:\WINDOWS\System32\DNHlp32.exe file to submit_stuffATxs4all.nl for analysis? (replace 'AT' by @)

We're pretty sure it's a baddie, but we would still like to have a closer look at it. We'd also want to submit copies to developers in the security field if it turns out to be a brand new one.

    Much appreciated :)

The file could possibly have the "Hidden" attribute. Here's how to show hidden and operating system files

Next, in Hijack This, check all of the following items, close all browser windows, and press "Fix Checked"

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Now download the PeperFix.exe tool from here:

    http://downloads.subratam.org/PeperFix.exe

Click on PeperFix.exe to launch it.

Click the Find and Fix button.

It will scan the %systemroot% folder and locate all the peper trojan files. You will be prompted to reboot. Reboot and it will delete the files.

After rebooting also delete the following:

The Midaddle folder in C:\Program Files\Common Files

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\atiisrgl.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\DNHlp32.exe

When done, post a fresh hijackthis log.

OK, here's the log after following all the steps of your second reply ...

By the way, atiisrgl.exe wouldn't delete Note that the machine has an ATI graphics system on it. Is that file related to it?

Chances are it could be, sorry about that... :( In that case you may want to have Hijack This restore this O4 run entry:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [frymxins] atiimxgl

Otherwise, that's a virtually clean log; have the following items fixed, and you should be good to go:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [2LRX2W83X2T3MQ] C:\WINDOWS\System32\XlwA.exe
