    Hi tsadler :)

You have a CoolWebSearch hijacker and that will require some special (free) tools to remove it. First is a tool called CWShredder

You can download it here (save it to your harddrive in a convenient location):

    http://www.spywareinfoforum.com/downloads/tools/CWShredder.exe

Next, please reboot your PC into Safe Mode.

How to start the computer in Safe mode
    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...2001052409420406?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

Click on the CWShredder icon (You will need to have all browsers and any open windows closed). Hit the *Fix* button to run it. Let it fix what it finds. When done, press *next* and you will get the results, and then *exit*

    Reboot back into normal mode.
    ................................................
Next, 1. Download this free tool called dllfix

    Download it here:
    http://downloads.subratam.org/dllfix.exe

    or here:
    http://tools.zerosrealm.com/dllfix.exe

    Save it to your desktop

It is a self-extracting archive; double click on it and install.

    2. Open the DLLFIX folder and double click on Start.bat.

At the main menu, choose option 1 (Run Find-All) and press *enter*. You will immediately get a prompt asking to continue, choose *ok*.

    3. Let the program run the search (this may take a few minutes)
When finished, it will popup a window saying *Done* and hit ok to view log. Notepad will open and display the log file output.txt

    4. Copy and paste the contents of that log back here. Close the dllfix.

We're not done yet, this is just to find the hidden file that is causing the reinfection. The fix step will be after we find it.
    .................................................
You need to MOVE your HijackThis program. Saved on your desktop like that, if it is used to make fixes, it will clutter up your desktop with the backup files which could easily get lost or deleted. Make a new folder on your harddrive and name it whatever you like, for example: C:\Program Files\HijackThis

Extract or move your HijackThis.exe into it. Run it from the new folder you made.

Now, please Scan with HijackThis and post a fresh log along with the log requested above from dllfix.

Ok, good job - looks like it's gone and you got the HijackThis program moved to a good location to make backups. Let's finish the cleanup :)

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an x in the boxes next to these items, then press *fix checked*

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =

    O8 - Extra context menu item: RemindU - file://C:\Program Files\UpromiseRemindU\System\Temp\upromise_script0.htm

O9 - Extra button: Related (HKLM)

O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links (HKLM)

O9 - Extra button: RemindU (HKCU)

    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.63.219.181.7

    O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://imgfarm.com/images/nocache/f...etup1.0.0.5.cab

    Reboot your PC

Delete the following folder named in bold:

    C:\Program Files\UpromiseRemindU

Clean out your Temporary files and empty recycle bin:
Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr

Let it scan and it will checkmark your Temporary Folder, Temporary Internet Files Folder and your recycle bin. Press *ok* to clear those out.

Download, install, update and run this free program if you don't already have it. When you get to the scan process it would be best to do that in safe mode.

Download Adaware (get the free edition)
    http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
(choose download from the lefthand menu)

Go to: Select Full Install and choose the download location of your choice (1.7mb)
    Choose Download from
    http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail.php3?fid=965718306 <--(I found FileForum easiest)

Be sure to UPDATE BEFORE SCANNING FIRST!! That is a very important step and I have included easy directions.

After download and installing first, please update the program. Just open Adaware and click on *Check for Updates Now* and then *Connect*. It will find a new reference-file. Click *ok* and let it download and install the updates by clicking on *Finish* .This will return you to the main screen. You should now see Reference File # : 01r318 13.06.2004 or higher listed.

Next, go to Settings (the gear icon at the top) and then *Scanning* and checkmark these items so they will be green:

    Scan within archives
Scan my IE Favorites for banned URLS
    Scan my hosts file

Then click *proceed* to save settings.

Click on *Tweak* next. And checkmark to make this green also:

Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion

    Click on *proceed*

Next, from the main screen, click on *Start* (lower righthand corner) and put a dot in the box next to *use Custom scanning options*, then click *Next* to start your scan.

Checkmark any items found after scanning to remove (this will actually put them in quarantine and can recover from backup if any should not be removed).

Reboot your PC after cleaning with Adaware and scan again. Repeat the process until no further items are found as bad.

Then reset your system restore points. Why? One of the best features of Windows ME or XP is the System Restore option, however if a virus infects a computer with this operating system the virus can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

    (winXP)

    1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    2. Reboot.

    3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Scan once more with HijackThis and post a fresh log please so we can see how it looks now :)

    You're welcome - we're glad we could help :)

Please visit this page to see our recommendations on how to prevent future infections (it's very useful)

Why did I get infected in the first place
    https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=27971

Additionally, I recommend you get the free tool, Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) from Microsoft to analyze your PC security for prevention purposes.

MBSA Version 1.2 will scan for common system misconfigurations on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 systems. This program will identify the system security weaknesses in your browser and operating system and provides easy instructions to correct them. This includes any missing critical Windows security updates, system vulnerabilities and your IE Browser security settings. Get the download here:
