It seems to me that even if you could protect a file from being copied or printed (pdf for example), as soon as the text of the file displays on a screen, it can be captured as a image -- starting with the built in Windows Print Screen utility.

    Why just external drives.

Also how original does your thesis have to be. There are routine softwares discussed here that do what you are talking about for example Sandboxie. Truecrypt, while it won't protect from copying makes the copy worthless.

You might want to spend some time here just reading some threads that might relate.

In any event your best friend would be google.

Even reading a file in Sandboxie - can't someone use the Print Screen to make a copy?

Wouldn't they have to be sitting at the computer. In that case it would take encryption or some kind of password access to the files.

OK, I'm missing what the OP is asking.

I thought the problem was when people were viewing someone else's document, say, on a network,
how to prevent them from copying/printing it - the way you can protect a .pdf file.

I can copy anything, but only for myself.
I can copy my original Windows Installation CD, MS Office CD, drivers CD's, ... to another blanko CD.
I copy my data every day to an external harddisk.

Is the purpose of your thesis to make all this more difficult for me in the future ? I hope not. Everybody copies anything to anywhere nowadays, including sending data as email-attachments to everybody world-wide.

You might do something about copying malware, that would be very usefull.

Sorry I can't help, my thesis has nothing to do with that subject.
Maybe in a few days I can find the time to see if I can find some references that could be usefull to you.

    Hello,

    1. Define illegal copying.
    2. When you say external devices - do you mean copy to external devices - or use an external device to protect against copying ...?

We want to protect our data. The external devices can copy files directly if we don't apply any restriction to it. you know some of literature that helps me to be guided..

Illegal copying means - stealing your data, or copying someones document without any authorization.

Hello cyberterrorist08. You cannot copy files from a computer to an external device if the device has no means of connecting to the PC. So remove your floppy drives, cd drives, usb sockets...

Everything is distributed today by the means of copying. You put your work in a floppy and bring it home, send your work to someone thru e-mail, give a copy of your software to download sites, etc. Preventing us to copy data from computers would make us resort to jotting/redoing the process (eg: download again) which is a tedious, time-consuming work. If we copy something from the PC, it doesn't mean we will plagiarize it. Most software, contents (media, documents) today have encrypted digital signatures, trademarks, watermarks, etc that protect them from alteration/modification.

Anyway, good luck with your thesis.
