HD not allowing certain access

Hi

A friend gave me a 40gb drive because he said he couldn't install XP pro on it.
I need to know if it is stuffed.

Anyways, I took it home and tried it. Windows would NOT let me format it, through Windows. "The drive cannot be formatted". I tried virus scanning, and it would lock up my pc or restart the pc (every other drive I have doesn't)

I ran scandisk, and after about an hour it still hadn't got to 1% lol. In that time

That is where it was (in replace of cd rom) and it wouldn't let me format through Windows

So I guess it is dead? Or going to be?
