hal.dll missing or corrupt

    I restored an old image i had from a few months ago and restarted but still wouldnt boot,i then restored the latest diffrerntial that i had and when i rebooted it said updating your computer(i think it was windows updates)and it booted normally?I have no idea but im back into windows and will make a new macrium image.I wanna thank everyone and you Brian K for helpin me out,much appreciated.

    I'm glad you are up and running. Weird that one image restored and the others didn't. I suggest you run the HD manufacturer's diagnostics. Good luck and keep us informed.

    Something corrupted the system after the older image was created. The second image didn´t contain the missing file, the older image did. Nothing to do with the disk.

    If you create an image of a running OS and that OS continues to run for a month, or several months, then you would expect those images to restore successfully. But they didn't. An image created a few weeks later did restore successfully. But whyo_O? You can have the most corrupted OS in the world and a good image will fix the problem. The restored image replaces the corruption. Similarly with a virus infected OS or a rootkit in the MBR. Fixed by an image restore.

    I don't know about Win8 but I've seen the "hal.dll is missing" error a few dozen times in WinXP. The file is never missing. The OS can't find it because of a mis-configured boot.ini. The WinXP issue is easily fixed,
