Google outlines new security features in Android 5.0

Google has outlined the enhanced security credentials of the upcoming Android 5.0 – nicknamed Lollipop – in an official blog post, BGR reports.

The post, entitled ‘A sweet Lollipop, with a kevlar wrapping: New security features in Android 5.0‘, highlights three features as especially noteworthy for the security conscious Android user.

“You can authorize apps with high-level permissions and deep down they’re being granted a lot more access than necessary. With SE Android, Google is expanding and getting more fine-grained controls and containment,” said Zach Lanier, senior security researcher with Duo Labs, the research division of Duo Security. “With SE Android, you’re much closer to having a real sandbox.”

I'm going to get REALLY peeved if smartphones get ahead of desktops in both screen resolution AND application protection (such as SELinux). I wish desktop application MAC could be half-way decent out of the box for both Linux and Windows, it's all too hard.

What the article forgot to mention:

When Apple and Google unveiled new encryption schemes last month, law enforcement officials complained that they wouldn’t be able to unlock evidence on criminals’ digital devices. What they didn’t say is that there are already methods to bypass encryption, thanks to off-the-shelf digital implants readily available to the smallest national agencies and the largest city police forces — easy-to-use software that takes over and monitors digital devices in real time, according to documents obtained by The Intercept.
