    Greetings all,

Recently two mysterious shortcuts showed up on our computer and a whole crapload of Casino popups came up at the same time. The two shortcuts were "Golden Palace Casino New!" and "Play Poker Now" (or something to that effect). This troubled me deeply so I did a search and found the program Spybot S&D. I ran that and it seemed to clean most of the poop off of our system but I was left with a few nagging things...

There are two programs in "Add Remove.." that I did not ask for - "Bridge" & "CasProg". There are also two suspicious looking items in the startup tab of msconfig - "vclox" and "fdgujwjz". Searches for the startup items produced nothing but while searching for "CasProg" I came upon this excellent forum.

So I had already completed the first step in "Posting Policy: Please read before posting your log!" - Scanning with Spybot and fixing all red items. Further scans with Spybot S&D produce nothing. I have dutifully scanned with HjackThis and here is the resultant log.

I should also say that at this point I am not experiencing any specific probs with our PC but I would really like to get rid of apps and startup items that I did not install. Another thing possibly worth noting is that I did an online virus scan from Panda's web site and it turned up two instances of "Bridge.exe" which their encyclopedia lists as adware. Scanning with my installed copy of Norton Antivirus comes up clean.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi splodge,

In regards to "Bridge" & "CasProg", if you did not install them your self or want them, I would use Add/Remove to get rid of them.

And for "vclox" and "fdgujwjz", I do not see anything in reference to this in your log. You have not disabled them on start up have you? From your log, it looks like you have not.

At this point your log is clean. If you have the two above disabled and/or remove the other two, post a new log after enabling them and/or removal of the two and I will look at the log again.

    HTH.....

    Regards,
    Kent

    Hi Kent

You were right, I had disabled "vclox" and "fdgujwjz" on startup so I enabled them again. Then I removed "CasProg" and "Bridge" using add remove programs.

After rebooting "fdgujwjz" was gone from the startup list in msconfig but "vclox" was still there.

I then ran spybot and it found two more instances of Advertising.com and one instance of Avenue A, Inc. After removing them I rebooted and ran Spybot again and this time it came up clean.

I ran HijackThis after all of that and here is the new log...

Run hijackthis, tick these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [vclox] C:\WINDOWS\vclox.exe

Reboot into safe mode by following instructions here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406
then as some of the files or folders you need to delete may be hidden do this:
Open Windows Explorer & Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and untick "hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
    Click "Apply" then "OK"

    Delete these files

    C:\WINDOWS\vclox.exe

    then
    Reboot normally

I Notice serv-U-32 in your log

That can be a legitimate FTP server but if you didn't install it yourself it is often used by hackers to take over your machine
let us know if it is legit otherwise we will help you cure the problem

Ok, I did that and everything went smoothly enough. The only thing abnormal was that I couldn't find the vclox.exe file after rebooting in safe mode. I searched both my HDDs while in safe mode just to be sure it wasn't in another directory but came up with nothing. (Yes, I set my folder options to view hidden files and protected operating system files and searched for hidden files as well.)

I'm assuming that HijackThis deleted the file when it fixed it though because after rebooting in normal mode vclox is gone from my startup list and did not show up when I scanned with HijackThis again.

I did install Serv-U myself and use it all the time so we don't need to worry about that.

Thanks very much to the both of you for your help. I would have been totally lost without it and probably would be reformatting my system right now as a result. This is a great forum.

Here is my current HijackThis log in case it helps at all.

Thanks Kent, I checked windows update and I'm all up to date. I'd sure like to know how all that crap got on our system as we are pretty careful about what we install.

Regardless, really appreciate that I found you guys!

    Cheers
