I am assuming that an ssh/ssl wrapped vpn connection would still be fine there even with Gmail. I guess the issue would be that a user couldn't communicate with other Chinese residents unless they both dropped off the radar with the aforementioned "connection" method. DPI would not pick up the Gmail use. I would hate that GFW censoring. Although we have our own issues too.
