I have recently signed up here and have been trying to read as many posts as I can. I am so impressed -you are all really wonderful! IMHO, and I am justa newbie, you are the best group I have come across. So I spent last night composing a detailed post and was called away suddenly, when I came back, finshed writing it, clicked post and LOST it all. I hate it when that happens. I had probably timed out ! I was too tired yesterday (thus my login name :p) to go back and retype it all!! So here it is in an abreviated version (aren't you lucky!:)) :
I had posted yesterday that I felt I needed to keep McAfee because I had such a hard time completely uninstalling it. The instant updater is well hidden (RuLaunch). But now you guys have me thinking. If I could get some remedial instructions on removing ALL of it (beyond Add&Remove Programs) I could install a better AV program and set everything up around that. Which brings me to these Questions.

Root and Paul sent me replies, thanks. I then started rethinking things. Uh Oh! Yeah, I should open it up and throw it out there but specifically with MY hardware and OS scenario below. What is the best set-up for these 9 things below to work together as a whole PACKAGE for a relative NEWBIE (still very shy of the registry and things like that but work well with detailed support and the only code I know is May-day! May-day! in morse code:).
Think the best, compatibility; ease, compatibility; functionality, compatibility. :) I would be happy to answer any questions if it helps. :) Thanks in advance for your knowledge, time, and effort.
    My scenario- :D
Dell Lattitude C840 Notebook, WIN2K Professional(NTFS), P4M, 1.8GHz, 30Gig HD, 1Gig RAM, NVIDIA GeForce4 440 Go, Toshiba CDRW/DVD SDR2102, logitech cordless keyboard and optical mouse, IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, Intel 82801CAM Ultra ATA Storage Controller, Firewire. This is DOCKED on a Dell Port Replicator and I have a ViewSonic VG191b monitor and HP d145 multi-function. I will be installing a Western Digital external HD soon.
Single user, SOHO, Cable modem, router sharing the above Dell notenook with older IBM laptop win98SE.

SOFTSTUFFFFFF- WIN2K Professional(NTFS), MS Office 2000 sp2 (sp3 created nightmares (long story but that's why I am here) so I installed win2k over itself and just stayed at sp2), ACT!, Omni form5, Record Now Max, Music jukebox, winamp3, Several Adobe Programs, IE 6 sp1, Internet Sweeper v1.8.6, latest Ad Awarew/Ref Update, Tauscan TRIAL version, McAfee AV 7.0 (did not install their firewall),Diskkeeper lite and basicallty just a few other viewsonic color monitor programs.

    So here it is:
WHAT IS THE BEST "CUSTOM PACKAGE" FOR MY WIN2K SCENARIO? with details please:).

    1- great AV
    2 - great AT /worm
    3- great Firewall
    4.-spyware
    5- sweeper/cleaner
    6- file checker
7- great easy back up program
    8- support program?
9- additional proven windows 2k helpers?

    My comments:
1 NOD 32 or Dr. Web?
2 TDS3 (does it come with worm guard? and can a newbie set defaults and feel safe at first?)
3 I love and have used ZApro successfully for years. Not currently loaded-waiting for input from you all:))
4 I have Adaware but seem to always have a glich or 2 with the ref update finding the site or similar funky things
5 Not happy with Internet cleaner - doesn't alway do what is say it will and vice versa
6 I don't have anything that does this sweep function as far as I know
7Veritas Simple Back-up doesn't have many options and adding files is a pain (too many steps)
8 How would they/it work with the others?

    My "to do list" :)
    1. Get McAfee off my machine!
    2. Decide what to do and start aquiring and installing the software.
    3. Get help from you again probably ;)
    4. Start focusing on my business and learnin how to use all this stuff.
    5. Profusely thank you all for helping me "get my life back" ( I have fallen soooo far behind due to many computer issues and my slow learning curve) and give you most highest praise as my new "Grand Computer PoooBaas" to all within my sphere of influence. (do you like Golden Retrievers?)

Thank You Thank You Thank You!

    1- I like DrWeb

2- TDS and Trojan Hunter seem to be the top choice at this forum.

3- Sygate Pro or Zone Alarm Pro. I prefer Sygate Pro.

4- Spybot SD for me !!

5- A good Internet cleaning utility is Internet Sweeper.

6- file checker...I'll leave that one for more knowledgeable members !! http://www.wilderssecurity.com/index.php?board=8

7- WinRescue 2000 is sweet and simple.

    8- o_O

    9- o_O

    IMHO !

Just about all these programs are available here

    http://www.wilders.org/downloads.htm

    Hope this helps !!

    Regards,
    bill ;)

At 9 I would suggest using Regrun. Especially since Win2k does not use the msconfig command.

Thanks you guys. Mickey, what is LNS?
    Anybody feeling particularly benevolent?
I am starting my own business and working at home. I gotta get my system set up fast but I am trying to hold out so I don't install and then uninstall stuff.
Thanks Pieter for the info re uninstalling McAffe. That site was a great call! I will uninstall it with confidence when the time comes.
    Cheers!
