    I know from personal experience that lotion helps improve the image capture of fingerprints.

    In the U.S. many jails use fingerprint scanners.
    Laser light shines on Optical glass and the lotion helps the ridges to be defined.
    Without lotion, the ridges in the image are blurred and is rejected by the OFR.

    It's a good thing we managed to beat off ID cards here in the UK otherwise we would have this kind of crap to look forward to.
