Freeware software to measure Internet usage

I'd appreciate if members cud suggest me free softwares that can be used to measure the Internet usage, my connection has a limit of 1gb transfer limit, exceeding it will be charged.

The softwares have to take less system resources.

i have something called NetMeter. if you click the systray icon>options>Alerts and Reports you can set it to alert you when you reach a certain limit.

I was looking for something to do this and after trying many free utilities, I settled for Netmeter which does the job well and has very little system hit.
